I've heard wet cat food is best, but dry is less messy and smelly, and seems better for tooth health. Is it okay to feed a combination of wet/dry? I'm thinking about switching between wet and dry food every day.

Hi margaret,
I consider feeding both wet and dry food for a few reasons and do that myself for my own cats. Subjectively for myself, I do feel that cat fed exclusively wet food diets do have worse looking teeth. I know other vets who disagree, but that's just my experience. There are other factors that play into dental health too. Cats exclusively on dry food will still require dental care, but I do think tartar build up will be slower. However, wet food contains a great deal of moisture content, and we know that moist foods are important for cats as a source of hydration. While cats do drink water, they are not accustomed to doing so as often as dogs. I like a balance. I feed my cats wet food in the morning, dry food mid-day (if we're home), wet food again around dinner time in the evening, and finally a late night dry food snack.

@chris-vanderhoof Thank you for the response. I will feed Hazel both dry and wet food.
