I want to give my sick kitty some amoxicillin (referring to dosage chart) I have from a recent prescription (Non expired). How long should it be on an antibiotic regiment? And if you cant legally tell me, then How long would a typical vet prescribe a random cat amoxicillin?

Thank you for your time and effort!

Sincerely,

Skintech!

Hi there,

An antibiotic course should always be directed by an attending veterinarian who can decide if they're appropriate to use. There are many situations where a cat's behavior or appearance may mimic a bacterial infection. Using antibiotics unnceccesarily may both delay appropriate treatment and contribute to antibiotic resistant bacterial strains.

If you don't have access to a vet, at least use one of our most applicable articles to make an informed decision.

But that said, in general, a typical antibiotic course for many conditions is 14 days. In specific cases and conditions shorter courses are appropriate. In some cases, courses may instead be longer but this is usally after seeing some noticeable improvement within 14 days, just perhaps not full resolution.

In many cases you will see at least some initial improvement after only a couple doses. If you do not or if what you're seeing gets worse, please make sure to get a veterinary exam.
