My lil guy had to have several teeth out. He eats canned food with no problem. However I have to go out of town for a week and can’t get him to eat kibbles again. I’ve tried wetting them adding tuna, he just picks the tuna out. I’m sure he’s afraid it might hurt. My vet said there was no reason he can’t eat  them now. I don’t know what I can leave for in between his morning and evening feedings. Have to figure this out before I go. And no I don’t have anyone that can stay here. Suggestions?

Are you saying you're leaving a 16-year old cat alone for a week?  Or are you saying that you have someone to come in to give him two meals per day but not three?  If it's the latter, then they can just give him more food during the two feedings to make a full day's worth of food.  If it's the former, it doesn't really matter, since your coming home to a live and happy cat is unlikely.

@mitchellregenbogen Yes, unfortunately we are attending a memorial for my brother-in-law making it a family reunion. We do have someone coming twice a day. He is on Thyroid medicine which is twice a day. He is already a little underweight so I encourage him to eat. Being that he eats mostly canned I worry about it getting gross just sitting there for hours. Thank you for your reply, I really do appreciate it

Hi Sandi,

Thanks for your question.

I'd agree with your vet, usually they can eat dry food after a few weeks of recovery post dental procedure. It may be that your cat is preferring wet food now, particularly after eating it during their recovery period. In general, it's a good thing that they're eating lots of wet food but I can see how that could be an issue when you're going away.

If you have someone visiting twice a day, they could feed larger portions of wet food at those times. I would still leave out some dry kibble during the day incase your cat gets hungry. I find that smaller kibble is useful when trying to get cats to eat a little bit of dry food but discuss this with your vet first, particularly if your cat is on a prescription diet and don't make any sudden diet changes. They need to be made gradually.

I hope that helps,

Aisling
