Hey!

Apologies if there is already a thread about this, I couldn't find such - I would love to know your thoughts on the brand 'Canagan' .

I fed my last cat their soups and tinned food just before he passed away, which he seemed to enjoy despite his reduced appetite, and the meat content looked good. Adopting a new cat this weekend, and was curious to know if it would meet your standards as good food amongst the other brands available in the UK!

Hi Lorna! I'm not familiar with the brand but happy to take a look at their products to offer you some initial thoughts.

Overall, it looks like a brand we'd recommend! Canagan appears to prioritize high-quality ingredients in meat-first recipes that don't contain artificial additives. I particularly like the variety of proteins they use, including some less common options like venison, rabbit, and duck.

The dry cat foods contain around 40% protein and 15-16% fat on a dry matter basis. I'd say that's on the higher end of the average protein spectrum for dry cat food but a little low in fat. The benefit is the recipes rely on animal-sourced fat (salmon oil) over plant-based options like sunflower oil or canola oil. These recipes do contain some plant protein concentrates like potato protein and pea protein but don't seem to rely on them super heavily. Like most dry foods, the carb content of these recipes is pretty high but at least some of it comes from nutritious foods like sweet potato versus something relatively devoid of nutrients like tapioca starch.

I like the Canagan wet foods a lot. You probably already know this, but the soups are not nutritionally complete, so they should only be fed as supplements or toppers. The wet food in small cans and pouches is nutritionally complete, though. They seem to be very high in protein and moisture with pretty low carbohydrate content. I'd prefer to see animal-sourced fat over the safflower oil but it's not a big issue.

So in general, I'd say Canagan is a great option for your new cat! There's plenty of variety to choose from, so you'll have an easy time giving your new friend a varied diet. If you're going to use some of the dry foods, maybe add some of the soups to each serving to counteract the low moisture content of the kibble.

Hope that helps!
- Kate
