Hello, My cat is currently recovering from Hemangiosarcoma. We were told he needs a high fat & protein diet with low carbs. I am in Canada and it was recommended he start the Hills ONC Care. However, looking at the ingredients I’m insure if this is the right choice. I’m looking for recommendations on a low carb kibble. He is currently on the Acana Homestead Recipe. I noticed the Pacifica recipe has lower carbs but not sure. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

@allisond are you looking for dry food? You're right about the ingredients in hill's. There's a dry food called Young Again you can buy online. It's high protein and high fat one zero or one with less than 6% starch. It's pricey, but no more than "prescription" food. They also have a lid formula for allergies. They have treats as well, but I give mine freeze dried raw treats, only 4 a day or they can cause constipation. They ship to Canada as well. They will answer any questions you have, and so will i

I don't like the food, because two vets told me that it is much too high in protein for a normal diet, but it may be what your little guy needs -- Dr. Elsey's Cleanprotein.  If I recall it's about 65% protein, and very, very low in carbs.  Check it out.

However, if one of the major brands makes a prescription food formulated for his condition, I would use that.  Don't worry about the ingredients because they're not trending-- it's the nutrients and formulation that counts.

Dr. Elsey's says its Cleanprotein dry is under 3% carbs.

Thanks so much everyone. This is really good info. I wish I would have known more before and not just trusted the vet food. Unfortunately, it looks like he may have another spot on his lungs that wasn’t viewable on the scans and is untreatable. So I am just letting him eat what he pleases for now with no restrictions.
