Have you ever heard of this German cat food brand? It's supposed to be very high-quality, but when I read the ingredients, the list is very vague. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Hey Rachel! I spent some time looking over the info on Nuevo's website so I could give you some thoughts. First off, Nuevo says "all products have the right balance of vitamins and minerals, which means Nuevo contains everything your cat needs for a healthy and active life." So, it appears that the products are complete and balanced (versus intended for supplemental feeding or treats). That's good news.

I think I see what you mean about the ingredients lists being vague. Are you referring to things like "fish and fish byproducts" and "meat and meat by-products"? The Super-Premium line appears to rely heavily on animal by-products but the Lovely Filets don't. These foods list whole proteins like turkey, chicken, or tuna as the main ingredients.

By-products in pet food are tricky to talk about, especially when the company is outside the USA—I'm just not familiar with the specifics of international standards for pet food ingredients. Generally speaking, however, animal by-products are parts of the animal that are safe but may be deemed unfit for human consumption (like scraps of meat, organs, etc.). They're not necessarily harmful or of low quality, it's just hard to tell when they're listed in such a vague way.

Here's an article we have on the subject:

I'd say that, overall, Nuevo looks like a decent brand. The recipes are focused around animal protein and don't appear to include artificial additives. If you prefer named protein (like chicken or tuna) over byproducts, I'd say stick to the Lovely Filets line over the Super-Premium.

Hope that helps!
