Cat demands pets by swiping with paw, claws out and nipping leg

One of my new pet client's cat was acting like he wanted to be petted, walking back and forth in front of me and slightly arching his back, so I knelt down and reached out with my hand.  He swiped at me with his paw and his claw got stuck in my hand.  Next he tried nipping my leg.  I texted the owner asking if this had ever happened to them and they said yes, he does that when he wants to be petted.  So probably this behavior is being reinforced.  My question is, what would be a better way to address this problem?  Thank you!

So he was a big fan of the slicker brush, just enjoyed being brushed and did not swipe at me or nip me. He is a demanding cat, paws at my leg when I am getting his food ready, if I leave him to go do something else, he runs after and then into me. Probably used to getting away with these behaviors. So next time I sit for him, I will come armed with a slicker brush and long pants.

Thank you for your helpful information. I am the pet sitter doing 1/2 hour drop in visits. He is a 2 1/2 year old American Bobtail. He does like to be combed, all they have is a comb. I don't think they have much experience with cats. And I don't think they will want to put in the effort to change his behavior. I don't pet him if he nips me. Today is my last day so I will try your suggestions and let you know what happens!

@freeandlvingit

Thank you for your excellent question.

Are you pet-sitting him? What is the cat's age, and would you know if the owner wants to change the behavior? I agree that the owner might be inadvertently reinforcing the swiping behavior.

If you’re pet-sitting, check with the owner if he likes to be brushed and present a brush/comb instead of your hand. To avoid leg nipping, toss him a toy before the approach as a redirection. Discourage the swiping or nipping of the hand and leg with a loud ‘ouch’, and don’t stroke him while he nips your leg.

The long-term solution will depend on the owner if they see it as a problem.

I hope the above tips help.

All the best,

Melina
