My cat suddenly is obsessed with getting out when we open the door. We have spray bottles and a can of pennies that we shake to scare her back into the house when we come home, but we'd like to figure out a way to train her to sit and wait. Some sort of positive reinforcement with treats possibly?

If you don’t have a clicker yet, please purchase one whenever you can. Use high-value treats for new cues or behaviors.
Start with basic clicker training of cues such as sit, stay, and stationing behavior, such as mat training.
