How to stop my cat going outdoors across the road

My cat is an outdoor cat and I want him to stop going across the road because he isn't great with cars.  He doesn't go far, just across the road to eat some ornamental grass there.  I'm thinking of spraying across the street with something he hates like lemon oil so he becomes disheartened with the idea of going over there.   Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hello and thank you for your question.

Does the property across the road belong to you or another owner? Personally I wouldn’t spray anything to minimize ingestion or toxicity. My suggestion would be to catify your garden and make it more appealing as well as secure for your cat.

Unsure of your current set up, perhaps you can install cat proof fencing, however if that’s not an option, try and make your garden more cat friendly by adding walkways, runners, plant hedges or shrubs, place cat-safe plants like cat-nip, silver-vine plus lemon-balm and provide lots of exploration opportunities with vertical spaces. Here are some more tips on how to make a cat friendly garden: https://icatcare.org/top-tip-make-a-cat-friendly-garden/ .

Hope this helps
