This is a tough question my niece asked me and I'm looking for advice.  Beloved cat Nox suddenly passed away and already the rest of the pack (two dogs and another cat) are missing him.  I'm not sure if he was the leader of the pack, but definitely the most popular one in the group.  How long should an owner wait before introducing a new member into the pack?

The remaining cat doesn't play with the dogs but misses her companion.  The dogs loved playing with Nox and are missing him.

Hi Dunk

I am so sorry to hear about your niece’s beloved cat Nox passing.

Mourning of a close-bonded cat can persist for an extended period; therefore, introducing a brand-new kitten or cat during the grieving process is not a good idea. Also, the bond is unlikely to be as strong as before.

I recommend reading the following article before adopting another cat: https://cats.com/cat-grief

Although it’s a personal choice, the time to get another feline is once all the pets and your niece are emotionally able to accept another cat.

Sending love & healing to your family

Melina
