Can anyone give me any advice on this? My cat is less than a year old. She has always had strange breathing and recently she had fluid from one ear. The breathing the vet intially thought was asthma but after listening to recording and a her breathing in person says her lungs sound healthy no fluid build up and that doesn’t sound like it and the sound is more situated in the top of the head. The swab of ear drainage shows no infection but was too inflamed to see anything. Her blood count and all other blood work is normal. My regular vet doesn’t have the scope to see in the throat and nose so we’re going to see another vet who does hopefully for a polyp removal surgery.
My question being does it sound like this is a accurate diagnosis and removal of a nasopharyngeal polyp???

*can attach videos of breathing just ask

Hi Lobo,

I’m sorry to hear that your cat has been unwell. To answer your question, based on the symptoms that you describe (and without me seeing your kitty) a nasopharyngeal polyp would be one of the main differentials in your cat’s case. It usually occurs in cats under a year old which would fit your cat’s age and it can cause noisy snuffly breathing and ear problems.

Depending on how big the polyp is or where it is (behind the soft palate or middle ear), sometimes it’s possible to see the polyp on an exam of your cat’s upper airway under heavy sedation or general anesthetic. Some cases might need x-rays, a check with an endoscope or even a CT to diagnose a polyp and to fully assess its size. If the vet you’re going to see has a scope then that should hopefully diagnose a polyp if there’s one there. Most cats do very well after removal of the polyp but the vet will go through this with you before the surgery (if a polyp is confirmed).

Feel free to upload any videos that you have and I can listen to them.

I hope that helps and that your cat feels better soon,

Aisling
