Hi! My cat, Eddie, is a 10 (almost 11) year old Russian Blue. I adopted him when he was 5. Eddie got IBD this year and apparently developed an allergy to chicken. I needed a novel protein and rabbit was recommended since it was a cooling protein. I tried a bunch of cans but Koha was a hit with him. He loves it! He was slowly gaining weight back. But it turns out now he has kidney disease. So the vet suggested I try a prescription diet but he did not eat any of them and instead the prescription diet gave him a huge flare up of his IBD. I tried the hills, the royal canin, and the purina but he did not like them. I have no idea what to do so i am back to feeding him the Koha rabbit because he will eat it and while on it his IBD is controlled. Do you have advice? He is still playful and seems so full of life (I caught him on top of my fridge the other day). I just am so scared I'm hurting him with a high protein diet. I don't know. Do you have recommendations for when there is comorbidity? Thank you so much by the way!

Hi @Alex_n_Eddie,

I'm so sorry to hear that your boy Eddie has both IBD and kidney disease. It sounds like you've been doing an amazing job trying to find the right diet for him. Managing two conditions with different nutritional requirements is always a challenge, made even more tricky if your cat won't eat the recommended diet.

I would ask your vet to speak to one of the nutrition specialists at Hill's or Royal Canin as they offer a free consultation service for situations like Eddie's. Even if you don't end up using one of their diets, they can provide general advice on what to look out for in a pet food for Eddie and you can see how his current diet compares. Another option is booking a consultation with a board-certified specialist in veterinary nutrition.

Wishing you all the best, let me know how you go.
