She Found a Tiny Kitten on Her Doorstep–All the Way Upstairs!

The world can feel like a dark place sometimes, with all the pain that humans put each other through. But, as Gigi’s mom puts it, the one thing we can bond over is cats!

Cat parents often feel like it’s destiny that brought them and their cats together, and she’s no different. Here’s how the cat distribution system worked in her favor.

“How Did You Get Here?”

Exhausted from a week-long trip, a late plane landing, and an Uber ride home, Gigi’s mom walked up her front steps ready to climb into bed. Instead, she heard a noise that stopped her in her tracks: a little meow, all the way up on the second landing.

The tuxedo kitten was incredibly small, and she had no idea how she could’ve gotten there by herself. Those big green eyes were crying out for help, so she took her inside.

Is Anyone Missing a Kitten?

She asked around her building to see if anyone was missing a kitten, but no one had any idea where Gigi could’ve come from. “It’s really like a stork came and, like, placed her there,” she said. Finding Gigi was meant to be!

She took her into the vet the following week. Even if she couldn’t keep her, she wanted to make sure that Gigi was healthy. She got her a round of vaccines and some flea medication, and back home they went.

Gigi was separated from her mother too early, and whenever they snuggled together, she’d suckle on her human mom’s neck for comfort. No one ever stepped forward to claim her, but today the two live happily together, glad they found one another that night!

What To Do If You Find an Abandoned Kitten

If you find an abandoned kitten like Gigi, here’s some advice from veterinarian Sarah Wooten:

First, bring the kitten inside and warm them up, keeping the room temperature at around 75°F. Offer fresh water and check to see if the kitten has teeth.

If they don’t have any teeth, they should be fed kitten formula (not cow’s milk!). You should be able to find some at your nearest pet store, or even the pet aisle of the grocery store.

If the kitten does have teeth, feed them some canned kitten food mixed with formula. We don’t recommend feeding adult cat food since kittens have different nutritional requirements. The additional protein and fat in kitten food helps kittens develop healthily.

Lastly, don’t wait to bring the kitten to the vet. Bring them in as soon as possible, to make sure they’re healthy and to receive personalized care advice based on their health and age. Keep the kitten separated from your other pets until they’ve had their check-up and been tested for infectious diseases such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) or Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV).
