Why Trust Cats.com

Before testing and reviewing Raw Dynamic raw cat food, we conducted extensive research about the brand and products offered. We looked at the brand’s background, processes, and the nutritional quality of their food, focusing on the food’s ingredients, appearance and consistency, and tested real cat reactions to it.

To test Raw Dynamic cat foods, we ordered the Freeze-Dried Rabbit recipe and two frozen options: Chicken and Lamb. Each food is formed into small individual cubes and comes packaged in a brightly colored, resealable bag. Before presenting all three to our test cat, Oliver, the frozen foods were thawed and the freeze-dried food was rehydrated. Oliver approached the lamb recipe with no hesitation as the clear winner, even though he usually prefers chicken.

About Raw Dynamic

Raw Dynamic Pets Cat Food Brand Review

Kirsten McCarthy / Cats.com

Raw Dynamic is a small, family-based pet food company based in New York. The exact year Raw Dynamic launched is not publicly available and the company did not respond to inquiries about when the brand came to the market. However, on LinkedIn, one of the company co-founders lists 2014 as the year he started with Raw Dynamic.

According to their website, the company mission is to offer high-quality pet food at an affordable price. The company was inspired by the family’s dog Jeda, who as a puppy exhibited many health issues, including allergies and digestive problems. Once Jeda transitioned to a raw food diet, her symptoms improved drastically.

Sourcing and Manufacturing

Raw Dynamic’s recipes are made from responsibly sourced, human-grade meats and organic produce. The company stands by the theory that meat is cleaner and more nutritionally dense when it is sourced from animals that are humanely raised, grass-fed, cage-free, and hormone and antibiotic-free. Raw Dynamic clearly identifies where it sources each of its meat ingredients: duck and chicken from New York and Pennsylvania, turkey from Pennsylvania, rabbit from France, and lamb and beef from New Zealand. The produce used in Raw Dynamic’s recipes is non-GMO, certified organic, and responsibly grown and harvested.

Raw Dynamic cat food is made in a company-owned facility in New York. All poultry-based complete-and-balanced recipes undergo high-pressure pasteurization (HPP), a technology that uses high pressure and cold water rather than heat to inactivate pathogenic bacteria. As a further safety control, each batch of food is sent out to a third-party lab for testing.

Recall History

At the time of this review, none of Raw Dynamic cat foods have been recalled.

What Kinds of Cat Food Does Raw Dynamic Offer?

Raw Dynamic offers a variety of single-protein, raw food for cats, as well as raw protein toppers, bone broth, and raw air-dried and freeze-dried treats. All Raw Dynamic nutritionally balanced cat food formulas contain 95% animal protein (including muscle meat, organ meat, and bone), and 4% fruits and vegetables. The remaining 1% is supplements (including fish oil, kelp, probiotics, and vitamins and minerals).

Raw Dynamic offers four frozen raw complete-and-balanced recipes, three freeze-dried raw complete-and-balanced recipes, and three frozen raw protein boosters (for supplemental feeding only) with the following protein options:

#1 Frozen Raw Chicken Formula for Cats

Frozen Raw Chicken Formula for Cats

Like all Raw Dynamic formulas, the Frozen Raw Chicken Formula contains one meat ingredient—chicken, which includes chicken muscle meat, organs, and bone. This recipe also contains fish oil sourced from sardines and anchovies for omega-3 fatty acids; organic carrots, beets, cranberries, spinach, kelp, and sunflower seeds; organic apple cider vinegar; probiotics; and supplements.

Once thawed, the frozen cubes can be broken up into a succulent, ground-meat texture. This food got a few bites from Oliver, until he realized he would rather be having the lamb.

Measured as dry matter, this recipe contains 50% crude protein and about 32% fat. The food’s dry matter carbohydrate content is 12.5%. This is species-appropriate for cats, which are obligate carnivores with no nutritional requirement for carbohydrates in their diet.

Overall, Raw Dynamic’s chicken recipe appears to be a high-protein, high-fat recipe that provides plenty of hydrating moisture with low levels of carbohydrates. It contains no artificial additives and has a short list of main ingredients.

This food contains about 43 calories per ounce and is nutritionally complete for cats in all life stages.

#2 Frozen Raw Lamb Formula for Cats

Frozen Raw Lamb Formula for Cats

Raw Dynamic’s Frozen Raw Lamb Formula contains one meat ingredient—lamb, which includes lamb hearts, lamb livers, and lamb bones. Although we think of the heart as an organ, it’s technically and nutritionally a muscle meat. This recipe also contains fish oil sourced from sardines and anchovies for omega-3 fatty acids; organic carrots, kelp, and sunflower seeds; organic apple cider vinegar; probiotics; and supplements.

The frozen raw lamb recipe is darker and less pink in color than the frozen raw chicken recipe, with little beads of fat incorporated within the fresh meat. This recipe was definitely Oliver’s favorite, considering that he chose it over the chicken recipe, which is usually his favored protein.

Measured as dry matter, this recipe contains more than 53% crude protein and about 31% fat. The food’s dry matter carbohydrate content is about 10%. This is species-appropriate for cats, which are obligate carnivores with no nutritional requirement for carbohydrates in their diet.

Overall, Raw Dynamic’s lamb recipe appears to be a high-protein, high-fat recipe that provides lots of hydrating moisture with few carbohydrates. It contains no artificial additives and has a short list of main ingredients.

#3 Freeze-Dried Rabbit Formula for Cats

Raw Dynamic Freeze-Dried Rabbit Formula for Cats

Raw Dynamic’s Free-Dried Raw Rabbit Formula contains one meat ingredient—rabbit, which includes rabbit with bone, rabbit livers, and lamb hearts. This recipe also contains fish oil sourced from sardines and anchovies for omega-3 fatty acids; organic carrots, kelp, and sunflower seeds; organic apple cider vinegar; probiotics; and supplements.

Measured as dry matter, this recipe contains more than 45% crude protein and about 19% fat. The food’s dry matter carbohydrate content is about 29%. This is higher than Raw Dynamic’s frozen raw recipes, and also higher than the brand’s other two freeze-dried recipes (chicken and beef).

Overall, Raw Dynamic’s freeze-dried rabbit recipe appears to be a high-protein, moderate-fat recipe that provides lots of hydrating moisture when rehydrated prior to feeding. It contains no artificial additives and has a short list of main ingredients.

This food contains about 115 calories per ounce and is nutritionally complete for cats in all life stages.

These cubes are crunchy and crumbly before adding water, which softens them into a texture that can easily be shredded. Oliver was least interested in this option, but did take a few bites only after it had been rehydrated.

What Do Customers Think of Raw Dynamic Cat Food?

Raw Dynamic Pets Cat Food Brand Review

Kirsten McCarthy / Cats.com

There aren’t many reviews of Raw Dynamic cat food online. This is namely because the food is only sold directly through the Raw Dynamic website and regionally through smaller retail stores. Raw Dynamic cat food is not available on Chewy or Amazon. I was only able to find one review, posted on the Raw Dynamic website.

“I love this brand and customer service is absolutely amazing! My cat loves their freeze dried raw food and frozen food. The ingredients are very high quality for a reasonable price.”—Kailyn Blankenheim, reviewing Freeze-Dried Raw Chicken Formula for Cats, on September 16, 2024

How Much Does Raw Dynamic Cat Food Cost?

Raw pet food is generally the most expensive type of cat food. Depending on whether you choose a budget or premium diet, the cost of dry cat food can range from about $0.50 to $1 per day and canned food can range between $1 and $5 per day. Raw food generally costs between $2 and $6 per day to feed. Raw Dynamic is average for a raw food, costing at about $4 per day (for the frozen raw chicken formula, $4.83 for the frozen raw lamb, and $6 per day for the frozen raw rabbit.

Raw Dynamic recommends feeding 1 cup (8 ounces) per day for a 10-pound cat. Before feeding it to your cat, thaw the raw frozen food in the refrigerator overnight or on the counter for 15 minutes. For the freeze-dried raw formula, rehydrate the food with 1/2 cup water per 1 cup of food.

As with all foods, these feeding guidelines are only a recommended starting point. Very active cats might need to eat more, and less active cats might need less.

Where Is Raw Dynamic Cat Food Sold?

Raw Dynamic cat food is sold directly through the Raw Dynamic website and through select retailer stores nationwide. You can search for a local retailer that carries Raw Dynamic here. Raw Dynamic is not sold through Amazon, Chewy, or other online retailers.

Raw Dynamic only ships their frozen raw recipes to select states, which are listed on the website. If you live in a state that does not fall in the shipping area for frozen food, you can order the freeze-dried raw recipes or search for a retailer near you that carries the raw frozen food. All orders over $65 qualify for free shipping. No minimum or maximum quantities are enforced to order, which is nice to see from a brand that ships frozen. For our testing, the products arrived within a week, packaged well with dry ice to keep the raw food fresh.

Overall, Is Raw Dynamic Cat Food a Good Choice?

Raw Dynamic makes high-quality, species-appropriate raw cat food for cats. Each recipe is limited-ingredient, grain free, and single protein, which is helpful for cats with food allergies or intolerances. Raw Dynamic only sells raw food, offering a good variety of foods offered including two types of raw food—frozen and freeze-dried—and four proteins—chicken, beef, lamb, and rabbit. The meat used in Raw Dynamic recipes is human-grade and comes from animals that are raised humanely, grass-fed, cage-free, and not treated with hormones or antibiotics. The produce ingredients are non-GMO, certified organic, and responsibly grown and harvested.

Nutritionally, this brand is a good choice for cats that enjoy raw food. It’s also easy to portion out and serve. Some raw foods come in one large chunk in vacuum-sealed packaging, much like ground beef, and these can be challenging to portion out. Raw Dynamic is formed into small cubes, which you can portion out with a standard measuring cup. The recyclable packaging has a zip-top seal, which keeps the food neat and contained once opened.

It’s important to note that although some of the recipes are low in carbohydrates (frozen chicken, lamb, and beef), all the freeze-dried recipes and the frozen rabbit recipe have a comparatively higher carb content. It might also be challenging to obtain the frozen recipes if you live in a state outside the shipping area and don’t have a local retailer that stocks Raw Dynamic’s frozen recipes.
