Elevated cat bowls are raised from the ground, either using a separate stand or a base attached to the bowl itself. Since they’re taller than your average food bowl, your cat doesn’t have to bend all the way to the ground while eating. This can make mealtime more comfortable, especially for cats with back or joint issues.
I purchased 8 elevated cat bowls and tested them with my own cats, evaluating their aesthetic appeal, ease of cleaning, and which dishes the cats seemed to prefer. Below are my findings after testing each bowl with my own cats.

Are Elevated Cat Bowls Good for Cats?
Unfortunately, there aren’t any scientific studies about which bowls are best for cats. This makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions about elevated bowls.
Elevated cat bowls are sometimes referred to as “anti-vomiting cat bowls,” and some cat parents say that they’ve worked to help their cats stop vomiting directly after meals. Of course, if your cat is throwing up regularly, you should check in with your veterinarian first to rule out other health issues. Once that’s done, a raised bowl is a cheap solution to try, but it doesn’t work for everyone.
If you’re familiar with raised bowls for dogs, you may know about their link to deadly bloat (also known as gastric dilatation-volvulus or GDV). While they were originally thought to help the condition, we now know that they increase the risk of dogs developing bloat.
However, there is no evidence of raised bowls worsening the risk of bloat in cats. Bloat is also less common in cats overall.
There are currently no veterinary recommendations for or against raised cat bowls, so it all comes down to personal preference and which bowl you think your cat will like best.

All products in this review were purchased and tested in my own home. I allowed my five senior cats to eat from each bowl, watching to see how comfortable they were while eating and if they seemed to prefer one over another–or over their usual plates, which aren’t elevated.
They generally appeared to prefer bowls with greater elevation, but most of all they appreciated the dishes that were wide and shallow.
During this process, I also handwashed each dish multiple times to see how easy they were to clean. While reviewing, I considered the above factors as well as the aesthetic appeal of each bowl and whether they were dishwasher or microwave safe.

The Necoichi elevated cat food bowl is extra wide and shallow for your cat’s whisker comfort. My cats seemed to prefer this one over the deeper dishes on our list, and looked more comfortable while eating out of it.

This is one of the taller bowls I tested, standing at 4.1 inches tall with a stand height of 3 inches. It’s dishwasher, microwave, and drop-safe–and I did unfortunately test that last one while trying to carry too many dishes to the sink at once!
It also has a curved inner lip to help prevent food spillage. While this isn’t 100% effective, it did make mealtimes less messy during my testing.
The one feature that didn’t hold up to testing is the bowl’s capacity, which is advertised at 2 cups. While I could balance a second cup of kibble on top, it started overflowing past the rim at around 1 ¼ cups. This is still a great size for cats, and overall I think the bowl is well-made and well worth the money.

#2 Runner Up: Ceramic Mushroom Whisker-Friendly Cat Bowl
This ceramic mushroom bowl caught my eye with its cute design and wide range of colors. What held my attention was the height (4.33 inches with a 2-inch stand) and width (5.5 inches) of the bowl. My cats are on the taller side, and they seemed much more comfortable eating from this than from their usual floor-level plates.

The rim of the bowl is tilted at 15° to help your cat eat comfortably. This design also encourages food to the center of the bowl, where it won’t spill as easily. In addition, the wide base prevents the bowl from tipping over while your cat eats.
Although it’s not listed on the Amazon page, the bowl can hold up to 1 ½ cups if filled to the brim, and more comfortably holds around a cup of kibble.
I found it easy to handwash, but it’s also dishwasher safe and can be used in the microwave if your cat prefers warm food. Overall, this one is very comparable to our top pick, and I personally prefer the design.

#3 Most Budget-Friendly: Frisco Elevated Stainless Steel Dog & Cat Bowl
Frisco is one of my go-to brands for budget-friendly cat products, and this raised bowl doesn’t disappoint. Its simple design consists of a stainless steel dish and an easy-to-clean metal stand, which raises the bowl 1.87 inches off the ground. I especially like this for short cats and kittens, or if you want to try an elevated bowl but want something shorter than the options above. However, it may not be tall enough to make a difference in the postures of average to large-sized cats.

The bowls are very wide and shallow, but still hold a generous 1.5 cups of food each (contrary to the listing, which puts each bowl at 2 cups).
Strangely, the stand is listed as ceramic on Chewy, but it’s made of plastic, with a raised frame that surrounds each bowl to keep it in place. The bowls are also quite heavy, which should help to prevent your cat from moving or tipping them over. The raised back will also help food and water from splashing onto your walls, and a slightly-raised edge in front helps prevent food from spilling onto the floor as well.
Overall, I really liked the size, shape, and design of this set. My only gripe is that I wish the Chewy listing were more accurate!

Slow feeders are great for cats who tend to scarf down food, especially if they’re eating quickly enough to cause stomach issues or vomiting after meals. I also like them for my cat Frankie, who eats faster than my other cats and gets bored while waiting on his siblings.
This one is advertised to hold about 1.8 cups of kibble, which is technically accurate. However, in my opinion, it more comfortably holds about ¾ to one cup. Beyond this, the entire pawprint design is covered and your cat can very quickly eat the food at the top, which defeats the purpose of using a slow feeder.

Each bowl has two slots it can lock into, including one that holds the dish tilted and one that holds it upright. This way, you aren’t wasting money if you or your cat dislikes the tilted dishes.
The stand is made of plastic, but the bowls are stainless steel and dishwasher safe. They hold about one cup of food while tilted, and one and a half when positioned upright.

There is also a three-bowl design in the listing, but we don’t recommend this option as it’s best to feed your cats separately. Cats are territorial animals, and separate feeding also allows you to monitor how much they’re eating. Changes in appetite are often the first sign of a health problem!

These collapsible Popware bowls from Dexas are a good solution for travellers who don’t want to carry clunky ceramic or metal bowls on their trips. I tested the large version, which holds 2.5 cups of food in each bowl and sits 8.5 inches off the ground, but there’s also a one-cup version that’s 7 inches tall.

I liked that my largest cats didn’t have to bend as far as usual to eat their food, as even raised cat bowls often sit pretty low to the ground. When expanded, the bowls don’t have the best design for cats, since they’re quite deep and get narrower toward the bottom. I actually preferred using them fully collapsed, and they still comfortably held a cup to a cup and a half of food this way.
The bowls are removable from the stand for cleaning and are dishwasher safe. The legs and bowls collapse down to 1.5 inches for easy storage, and everything snaps together so that it stays in one piece.

How to Choose the Best Elevated Cat Bowl
There’s a lot of range when it comes to elevated cat bowls. They’re made with various materials, stand at different heights, and might even be tilted. It can be surprisingly overwhelming to choose one!
Here are some things to consider before buying:
Materials and Durability
Ceramic or stainless steel dishes are recommended. Plastic dishes are more porous and scratch easier, and those abrasions on their surface can harbor bacteria. This often causes chin acne in cats.
Plastic bowls also tend to show more wear and tear, whether it’s staining, scratches on the surface, or holding onto odors. Though they’re usually cheaper, they’ll need to be replaced more often.
Shape and Size
Elevated cat bowls vary in height, with some still sitting quite low to the ground while others are raised by several inches. Ideally, your cat won’t have to hunch over while eating, but they also won’t struggle to reach the bowl.
When it comes to the size and shape of the dish, I recommend looking for one that is relatively wide and shallow. The existence of whisker fatigue is debated amongst veterinarians, but anecdotally, I’ve noticed a preference in my cats for dishes that don’t touch their whiskers as much.
Ease of Cleaning
Most raised cat bowls are dishwasher safe, but make sure to check before buying if this is important to you!
If the bowl comes with a separate stand, you’ll also want to consider how easily it can be cleaned and if it can also be placed in the dishwasher. It’s inevitable that the stand gets messy at some point, and with some cats you may need to clean it daily.
Lastly, some dishes or stands have features that keep the floor around them cleaner, which can greatly reduce your clean-up time. Look for solid stands with raised edges, non-slip stands or feet, and bowls with curved inner lips to prevent spillage. Tilted bowls can also help since the back edge is taller than the front.
Other Features
The list above will be enough to suit most cats, but there are some additional features that may be helpful.
If you microwave your cat’s food, purchasing a microwave-safe bowl will prevent you from having to transfer it from another dish, giving you one less thing to clean.
Slow feeder bowls have protrusions on the bottom that stop a cat from gulping down all of their food at once, which helps with digestion, provides mental enrichment, and may help cats who vomit after meals.
