A sweet cat with a mysterious leg deformity waited to be adopted for two full years. And now, Mr. Toe Beans – his name a reverse play on the fact that he was born with no paws – has finally found the loving home he deserves, with people who fully embrace him for the unique cat he is!

The cat, a brown tabby with white, began his journey in July 2023, when the Nashville Humane Association took in the stray kitten along with his mother and littermates, none of which had the same condition. Mr. Toe Beans needed round-the-clock care for a long time due to his physical challenges, which don’t stop with the absence of paws at the bottom of his legs. Each of his legs is a different length, his vision is impaired, and his blood pressure is high.

Yet a year later, Mr. Toe Beans was ready for a foster home. And, as so often happens among us rescuers, that home – with Micah Bradley, a Nashville shelter volunteer – turned into his forever home. And despite his physical challenges, Mr. Toe Beans – or “Beans” for short – is thriving without actual toe beans and has no awareness of his disability.

“He has no idea; he was born this way,” Micah says. “I don’t think he’s ever thought about having feet or thought any differently. He’s always seemed totally happy. He knows his routine and he likes it. He’s totally adapted. … He’s totally happy.”

Mr. Toe Beans shares a home with Micah and her husband, Dillion, along with the Bradley family’s two dogs: a Chihuahua mix named Elric, and a beagle terrier mix named Spyro. The cat loves playing with the dogs, and they tackle each other.

Mr. Toe Beans’ disability is rare, and it is unknown what caused it, though one theory is that the baby didn’t have enough space in the crowded womb, Micah says. His legs end in simple nubs with no feet at all.

“There’s not a lot of precedent for a cat with no feet,” Micah says. “He’s his own special little cat.”

Though Mr. Toe Beans was evaluated for prosthetics, Micah says, professionals determined that he just wasn’t a good fit for these devices. So, the resourceful and cheerful cat has just learned to manage, and his family has made accommodations for him.

Mr. Toe Beans – whose longest leg is 2 to 3 inches longer than the others, though his front legs are close to the same length – walks by pushing off his hip, and moving around in a very clunky gait. He can only walk on soft surfaces like carpets and blankets; he slips and slides around hard floors.

“If he is on hardwood, he starts meowing like he’s stranded, which he is,” Micah says. “You have to go help him.”

The sweet cat sleeps in his own towel-lined guest bathroom upstairs, where he eliminates on puppy pads because he is unable to use a litter box. Since Mr. Toe Beans can’t walk upstairs, his mom and dad carry him up to his room. Through trial and error, both Mr. Toe Beans and his family have learned where he can and cannot go. He takes medication for his high blood pressure.

Despite Mr. Toe Beans’ special needs, he is a delightful cat, and Micah feels so lucky that she heard about him through a volunteer email two summers ago that asked: “Who can take this footless cat?” She couldn’t resist.

Fostering Mr. Toe Beans was supposed to be just for a month – and then, because his health was poor, the shelter didn’t think he would make it and considered hospice. But then, while in foster care, the cat’s health started to improve gradually and he stabilized. After Mr. Toe Beans spent a year in foster care, the family grew attached to him. Micah and Dillon knew what was coming: Mr. Toe Beans wasn’t going anywhere. They’d fallen in love with him.

“It became clear he should stay here, so he did,” says Micah, who calls Beans a “Daddy’s Boy.”

Mr. Toe Beans has become a sensation on social media, with more than 4.6K and 11.1K followers on “The Footless Cat” pages on TikTok and Instagram, respectively; he also has a new YouTube channel. The cat’s pages show his daily joys and struggles, including the need to get occasional baths due to his lack of feet and tendency to get dirty. He gets many supportive comments from fans, like “Mr. Toe Beans, you are a perfect little sweetheart. Luv you.” Recently, Mr. Toe Beans became a Chewy “Chewpanion.”

Certainly, Mr. Toe Beans has surpassed all expectations, given that he was in hospice less than two years ago. He has his challenges, but his veterinarian thinks he will have a cat’s normal lifespan, which is about 15 years for an indoor cat.

“He’s totally happy; he’s just living his best life,” Micah says. “He’s spoiled rotten and hangs out on his bed all day. He’s certainly found his way to keep himself entertained.”

I have a cat her name is Peggy and she was born with no back paws. She gets around very well but like Mr toe beans she must stay on rugs or any soft surface. And her back legs are also different size.
