It can be easy to forget about the effect that human conflict has on animals. While we typically focus on human casualties (and rightly so!), war also has a devastating impact on the planet, our wildlife, and even our pets.
Domesticated animals like cats often suffer the most, because they depend on humans to survive. During war, many cats are left to fend for themselves when their humans are no longer able to care for them.
This is the story of just one rescue cat from Ukraine, but unfortunately, cats in many countries across the world are facing the exact same struggles. Homeward Trails Animal Rescue is hoping to make a difference in the lives of cats, both at home and abroad.
Evacuated to Safety

In October of 2022, Gizmo was evacuated out of the conflict zones in eastern Ukraine. Her rescuer was volunteering at a shelter there at the time, and decided to bring Gizmo back to the United States.
She turned out to be the best travel buddy. Despite her past and her current disabilities, she’s a very calm cat. On the plane, she sat up “like a little human,” observing her surroundings and seeming happy to experience a new adventure.
Struggling to Find the Right Home

Unfortunately, Gizmo is disabled, and disabled cats can be hard to find placement for. Her rescuer wanted her to have the best life possible, and that meant finding someone who was willing and able to commit to her special needs and to accommodate her mobility problems.
Personality-wise, though, Gizmo is a catch! She loves people and cuddling on laps, is incredibly outgoing, and fears nothing. When she wants attention, she stares and cries until you can’t help but focus on her. Her rescuer describes her as having the best personality and being super adaptable.
It took time to find Gizmo’s perfect family, but now she’s living with a young woman who was very excited to bring her home! She already had one cat of her own, and lots of experience with disabled cats. You can follow Gizmo’s future on Instagram.
Rescuing More Cats
Of course, the woman who rescued Gizmo is still volunteering in Ukraine animal shelters, and raises money to bring cats back with her after each trip. She hopes that Gizmo’s story will inspire more people to help, too.
Ultimately, we cannot stop cats and other domesticated animals from being hurt without first putting an end to the human suffering in Ukraine and other war-torn countries. However, even saving one life makes a huge difference. Please check out Homeward Trails Animal Rescue and support their incredible work!
