Persian Cat Feeding Guide:Yes, I am Fluffy & Cute – Now Feed Me!

In general, Persian cats will benefit from a diet that consists mostly of moist foods. Dry cereals can supplement our main diet. There are foods on the market that promote the “kept” lifestyle. And of course, kitty requires plenty of fresh water daily.

Here are some Persian cat food suggestions to keep in mind

Dry Foods

The regular diet for a cat out in the wild has a high protein content, which comes from consuming the meat of their prey. It is recommended that the domestic Persian cat diet be a high protein one.

Look for dry cereal brands that have high quality ingredients, are rich in proteins and vitamins, and include probiotics. Probiotics provide a source of “good” bacteria to help keep kitty’s digestive system balanced.

I know of at least one maker of dry cat food that has a cereal that is specifically created for the “Persian Breed” as labeled on the bag.

There are also manufacturers that offer foods for cats with “long coats” and others that offer “indoor” varieties for cats, like me, that don’t venture beyond the door. You might want to try out these options.

Moist Foods

Wild cats get most of their water content from their prey, but domestic house cats seldom, if at all, get the opportunity to eat nature’s wild meat. This means that kitties have to get their water through other means, such as by eating moist foods.

Look for quality foods with a high protein and high water content and that have an excellent source of vitamins.

Because there is a higher occurrence of polycystic kidney disease with Persian cats compared to other cat breeds, it becomes even more important for kitties with the disorder, like me, to take in extra moisture through moist foods.

For instance, my vet has advised my human to feed me a diet that includes 80% moist foods.

Water

Make sure that your Persian kitty has plenty of water to wash down his food and to keep him/her hydrated.

We cats don’t tolerate stale water, nor should we have to, so please refill kitties bowl daily and add water as needed throughout the day. Also, make sure and wash the bowl periodically with mild soap and hot water to eliminate bad bacteria.

Mom keeps one of my water bowls near my food bowls. She keeps another bowl or glass filled for me on the nightstand by her – “my bed.” I prefer that my water bowl is spaced a little ways apart from my food bowls.

Some cats prefer that their bowls be in completely separate locations. It is best not to put the water dish too close to kitty’s dry cereal bowl anyway. This is because water can splash from the water bowl into the dry cereal, causing mildew to form, which can be very toxic to your pet.

I hope you found this article on the Persian diet helpful. Please be sure and consult your vet prior to starting kitty on any diet or changing your kitty’s existing diet plan.

Make sure and notify your vet immediately if you suspect your kitty is having an allergic reaction to a specific food. If your kitty has food sensitivities, like me, your vet may recommend a prescription diet or a diet that eliminates certain ingredients.
