Did you know that cats can be socialized to travel, interact happily with new people, and embrace new situations, very similarly to dogs? While many cats happily spend most of their lives indoors, this is only one way that their lives can look.

Georgie’s mom has been training him from a young age because she knew exactly the kind of cat she needed to fit her active lifestyle. Despite his “resting cat face” that makes him look a bit grumpy, Georgie is a total sweetie who loves people. He’s so well socialized that he can sit calmly in an airport and people-watch, and he’s been to over 40 cities across the United States.

Wondering how Georgie’s mom accomplished this? Let’s dive in!

Training From a Young Age

In the beginning, Georgie’s mom wasn’t an animal person. She never planned on adopting a pet, and thought it was ridiculous to see people “goo-gooing” over their own.

Then, she met Georgie. The moment she saw him, she knew they were soulmates, and she just had to adopt him!

She says that a lot of people have very limited expectations of cats, but she didn’t want that for her and Georgie. She knew that if he was going to be part of her life, he needed to get accustomed to travelling to new places and experiencing new things.

Not every cat can adapt to this kind of lifestyle, but luckily Georgie was young and had good experiences travelling with his mom. Now, they’re always out and about, whether they’re flying to a new city, strolling on the beach, or just taking a walk.

When Georgie is relaxed, he has “resting cat face.” Strangers often comment on how chill he is, even in hectic environments, and are amazed at how well he behaves. It’s not often that you see a cat who’s so at ease in public.

Like most cats, Georgie only wants to be touched on his terms. That said, he’s always wanting to cuddle strangers!

His mom says that when they’re out, Georgie will “spot his victim.” He starts purring, gets a frown on his face, and marches right up to them! He likes to rub against people’s legs, fiercely affectionate.

Georgie’s mom strongly believes that your pets, especially cats, shouldn’t limit your lifestyle. She hopes that Georgie can inspire other people to start socializing their cats and giving them new opportunities. Cats can grow and learn just like humans, she argues.

Of course, every cat has their own unique personality, and older cats especially may struggle to adapt to a busy life of travel. However, even small steps can enrich your cat’s life and help you bond even more closely with them.

A great place to start is your own backyard. Harness training will open up a world of possibilities for your cat, whether they’re simply getting fresh air on the porch each evening or travelling to new cities like Georgie.

Remember to always take things at your cat’s pace, because moving too fast can do more harm than good. It’s also important to read your cat’s body language and respect the boundaries they set. As cat parents, it’s ultimately our responsibility to tailor our lifestyle to the cats we adopt–not the other way around.
