Skulls Unlimited’s Museum of Osteology in Oklahoma City is the only dedicated skeleton museum in the United States. It’s also the home of Sir Indiana Bones, a cat who resides full-time in the museum!

We talked to museum employee Brenna Glover to learn more about Sir Indiana Bones, also known as Indy, his adoption story, and how he and the museum are working to help other animals in need.

Choosing the Perfect Office Cat

Indy’s humans knew they wanted an office cat to work with them at the museum, but it was difficult to choose just one! With so many homeless cats, walking into a shelter can feel both overwhelming and heartbreaking.

But when Indy saw them, he knew. Brenna says he chose them, and seemed determined to win their hearts! Him being so social was important, too, since he’d be living in the museum and interacting with staff and guests.

They call him their chief moral officer, because he makes everyone’s days brighter. He seems to sense when someone is having a bad day, and will provide extra snuggles to help them decompress!

Indy doesn’t go home with anyone at the end of the workday or on weekends. Instead, Brenna explains, he lives on an opposite schedule to most housecats.

While cats are often left at home while their humans are at work, Indy sees his humans during work hours and gets to roam the museum by himself after everyone has gone home.

Like most cats, he’s attached to his routine. He greets the museum employees every single morning, demanding pets and checking in to make sure his humans are happy. Then, of course, it’s breakfast time.

The staff know where they can find him napping depending on what time of day it is. One of his favorite spots is in the kitchen, where he has his own counter cabinet with his bed inside. He opens up the door and tucks himself away!

He also loves lying by the elephant skull and the polar bear taxidermy that the museum has on display.

Of course, when there’s bad weather or a major event upcoming, Indy does have someone to go home with. This helps keep him safe when necessary.

Supporting Other Animals in Need

Indy is a real character. When a camera comes out, he acts like he’s posing! He knows all his best angles, and he’ll also sometimes show off his belly or jump into the windowsill to catch the natural light.

He’s beloved by guests and has become the museum’s mascot. Indy has his own page on their website and even his own merch! This includes mugs, stickers, candles, and more.

The best thing about his popularity is that the museum is using it to help other animals. A portion of Indy’s merchandise sales are given to local shelters and other animal wellness causes.

It turns out that, when they adopted Indy, the museum wasn’t saving only one animal after all.
