Ashley was allergic to cats, so she never saw herself adopting one. She was a dog person through and through, enjoying her life with her rescue pup, Axil.
Then, an adorable blind kitten named Orbit came into her life and changed everything.
A Sick Kitten on the Streets
When Ashely found Orbit, he was wandering the streets alone. She suspects his mom had abandoned him and that he’d been on his own for a while.
He acted like a normal kitten at first, happy and playful. Then, she noticed that he felt very hot to the touch. His body temperature was 105°F. (While cats run a little warmer than humans, their normal body temperature is between 101-102.5°F.)
Orbit was rushed to the emergency veterinarian but, unfortunately, they didn’t know exactly what was wrong with him. It seemed to be a virus of some sort, so they prescribed antibiotics.
She says the antibiotics were constant, but Orbit didn’t fully improve until he had surgery to remove his remaining eye tissue.
It was a rough recovery for a kitten who’d spent so long clinging to life, but Orbit made it! Now, he’s finally healthy.
“I Can’t Get Attached to This Cat”

Famous last words, right?
Although Ashley was terrified to get attached to Orbit while he was sick, caring for an ailing animal creates a bond like no other. Despite her fear, Orbit was hers–and, as it turns out, he was just what she needed!
When she and her partner broke up, Orbit clung to her, and they both agreed she would be the one to keep him. Orbit was there for her throughout the breakup as well as some really difficult struggles with her physical and mental health.
After his surgery, Orbit became a little bundle of energy. He’s your typical orange cat–obnoxious, playful, and endearingly sweet. He goes everywhere with his mom, and she says that he helped her to see the big picture.
If Orbit could be this brave and resilient, then she could get out of bed every day and put her best foot forward. He’s the real love of her life, she says, and she wanted to give him the world!
She can’t believe that she waited until her 30s to know the love of a cat, but now Orbit and his dog brother Axil mean everything to her. They’re like her children!
Do You Have Cat Allergies?

As a fellow cat parent who’s also allergic to them, I know the struggle! Some people with cat allergies simply can’t be around them, but for those of us with mild reactions, here are some tips:
- Brush your cat at least once a week. This keeps their coat and skin healthy, and helps to collect fur and dander so it doesn’t spread as far throughout the house.
- Keep a consistent cleaning routine. Vacuum, dust, and clean soft surfaces frequently.
- Use furniture covers. They don’t have to be fancy! A blanket on your couch works just fine, and is much easier to wash than cushions or even cushion covers.
- Run an air purifier. You’ll be shocked at how much dust and debris they collect, and your air will be a lot cleaner as a result.
- Consider an allergen-reducing cat food. My cats eat Purina Pro Plan LiveClear, and it makes a huge difference for my own cat allergies!
- Don’t fall for the myth of hypoallergenic cat breeds. Although some longhaired breeds produce fewer allergens, there isn’t a breed of cat that’s entirely allergen-free. In addition, cat allergens are found in their saliva and dander, not their fur. This means that Sphynx cats can actually be worse for your allergies than furry cats.
Hopefully these tips make bonding with your cat more joyful. Less sniffles, more play!
