Zelda and her mom were staying in the mountains when Zelda got outside and managed to evade her mom for an entire night. She couldn’t find her!
When she shared her experience online, one of their followers suggested that a balloon might make it easier to track Zelda on her outdoor adventures. Her mom decided to try it and post it online, thinking it would look funny and make for interesting content.
The cat who wears balloons
Zelda’s mom attached the balloons to her harness, and they were easier to see from a distance than the black cat is on her own. It wasn’t only people online who thought the idea was clever, however. It caught the eye of people in person, too, especially children.
She says that kids will often approach and ask for Zelda’s colorful balloons. She gives them away so they aren’t wasted after one use.
Zelda has worn many colors of balloon as well as various prints, including ones with confetti and Christmas themes.
It seems like her mom mostly uses the balloons for pictures. It’s important not to let cats wander with balloons or other stringy materials attached to themselves, as they could get caught on things outside. This is also why it’s important that your cat be fitted with a breakaway collar if they’re going to wander–or, even better, a harness and leash so that you can adventure outside together.
Third time’s the charm
Zelda’s mom thinks their meeting was destiny. She’s Zelda’s third owner. The first person adopted her from the shelter and kept her for two years before falling into financial struggles. Zelda’s mom met her through her sister’s boyfriend, who couldn’t keep her because her sister already had two cats.
This might have been okay if they could get along, but she says that Zelda much prefers being an only cat. She likes her alone time and having all of her mom’s attention!
When she adopted Zelda, she had just graduated school and was beginning a new job. She was also in the United States, away from her family and feeling detached from the people she loved. Zelda was part of her new beginning, and also a much-needed companion. Her mom couldn’t have been happier to meet and adopt her.
A cat with some quirks
Zelda has a few unique personality quirks–what cat doesn’t? Her mom says that she’s a very ladylike cat who prefers men over women. She’s also quite calm.
She enjoys hot water and taking warm baths in the sink, getting soap gently massaged into her fur by her mom. The family says that she’s like a human spirit in a cat’s body.
Zelda is also very outdoorsy and loves going on adventures with her mom. She likes going to the park, feeling the sunshine on her face, and munching on grass.
She’s a very social cat, and her balloons help to catch the attention of strangers. They’re the perfect conversation starter!
