Why Trust Cats.com

Bagel lounging as Kate researches cat products. Kate Barrington / Cats.com

Not only have I been a cat owner for nearly a decade and a half, but I’ve been testing and evaluating products for Cats.com for four years. My three cats have helped me test everything from cat food and treats to litter boxes, grooming products, and pet tech.

For this roundup, I included a few standout products I discovered during the past year as well as a few long-standing favorites in my household. These products have been thoroughly tested and, while individual experiences and preferences may vary, they all come highly recommended by the team at Cats.com.

Our Top 10 Favorite Cat Products

When you become a cat owner for the first time, there are a few essentials you’ll need to stock up on. As you get to know your cat and gain experience as a cat owner, however, you’ll start to develop your preferences. You’ll get a feel for which products suit your needs and which ones aren’t a good fit.

The products included in this list are some of my personal favorites—or recommendations from other members of the Cats.com team—which are also well-liked among the general cat lover community. This isn’t a comprehensive list of supplies you may need as a cat owner, but a few recommendations might have flown under your radar.

#1 Best Cat Food: Fussie Cat Premium Tuna with Salmon Formula in Aspic Grain-Free Canned Cat Food

Fussie Cat Premium Tuna with Salmon Formula in Aspic Grain-Free Canned Cat Food

My cats go crazy for chunky canned cat food—especially one that has plenty of gravy or sauce. This Fussie Cat formula is a hit in my household. Made with tuna and salmon as the primary ingredients, it’s packed with animal protein and has a strong aroma that gets my cats’ attention.

If you have a picky eater on your hands, this Fussie Cat formula might be worth trying. It has a moist, chunky texture and a fish flavor that cats seem to enjoy. The limited list of ingredients and high moisture content make it easily digestible. It’s low in calories and fat, so it also makes a great special treat or wet food topper.

Keep in mind when introducing a new food that it’s wise to transition your cat slowly. This Fussie Cat formula also contains gum thickeners which have been known to trigger loose stools in some cats, so incorporate it into your cat’s diet gradually.

#2 Best Air Purifier: QAIS-air-04 Air Purifier

QAIS-air-04 Air Purifier

QAIS-air-®

Litter box odor is always an issue in my house because I have three cats and multiple boxes for each of them. While I keep a mini air purifier inside my main covered litter box, this QAIS-air-04 air purifier is designed to be mounted on the wall. This makes it compatible with any type of litter box.

Winner of the 2023 Pet Innovation Award, the QAIS-air-04 utilizes photocatalysis-integrated ceramic technology (PiCTECH)  to neutralize odors. It is particularly effective in combating ammonia odor, and its stylish, whisper-quiet design enables it to blend seamlessly into your home.

What We Liked

  • Convenient wall-mounted design
  • Utilizes photocatalysis-integrated ceramic technology
  • Specifically targets pet odor

What We Didn’t Like

  • Fairly expensive
  • Not a free-standing device

#3 Best Cat Bowl: Necoichi Extra Wide Ceramic Elevated Cat Food Bowl

Kate Barrington / Cats.com

A great cat bowl is one of those little luxuries that you need to experience to appreciate. I like this Necoichi elevated cat bowl because it’s made from heavy ceramic and features a cute paw print design. The wide base makes it nice and sturdy, so my cats can’t tip it over.

Since they’ve gotten older, my cats now prefer eating from raised bowls—they seem to find it more comfortable. This Necoichi bowl stands about 4 inches high and it has a 6-inch-wide bowl. The bowl is wide enough that it doesn’t rub up against my cat’s whiskers but has a curved inner lip to help keep food from spilling out.

What We Liked

  • Elevated design enables a natural eating position
  • Made from sturdy, hygienic ceramic materials
  • Has a wide base with anti-slip ring
  • Wide bowl doesn’t irritate sensitive whiskers

What We Didn’t Like

  • Ceramic is prone to breaking

#4 Best Pet Tech: Litter-Robot 4

Litter-Robot 4 with cat inside

Note: This image shows the Litter-Robot 4 partially propped up on a litter mat. We do not recommend this—the Litter-Robot only works on a flat, level surface. Kate Barrington / Cats.com

As a fan of the Litter-Robot 3, I was excited when the newest model came out. The Litter-Robot 4 offers a large, open entry and an advanced sensor system that detects your cat’s presence in the litter box. My cats took to it quickly and it’s performed consistently well for the few months I’ve had it.

The Litter-Robot 4 takes the hassle out of scooping the litter box and keeps dirty litter tucked away in a sealed drawer. It’s very effective in controlling odor and the only maintenance involved is refilling the litter bed and emptying the waste drawer.

The Litter-Robot 4 is a significant investment, but it’s an impressive piece of pet tech that outperforms other automatic litter boxes I’ve tried.

What We Liked

  • Takes the hassle out of scooping litter
  • Offers exceptional odor control
  • Sensor system detects cat’s presence
  • Works consistently without jamming

What We Didn’t Like

  • Costs nearly $700
  • Must be used with clumping cat litter

#5 Best Window Perch: K&H Pet Products EZ Mount Cat Window Perch

K&H Pet Products EZ Mount Cat Window Perch

K&H Pet Products

One of my cats’ favorite places to nap during the day is on the window perch in my home office. This K&H model was straightforward to install, and it’s generously sized. My cats are small, but the large suction cups and heavy-duty steel frame are designed to support up to 50 pounds of weight.

Unlike other window perches I’ve tried, this K&H model folds up easily if I need to close the blinds for a video call. The removable cover is machine washable—it can even be paired with the K&H heated cat pad. I just add a cozy folded blanket in the winter to keep my cats warm.

What We Liked

  • Easy-to-install design
  • Folds up so you can close the blinds
  • Sturdy, holds up to 50 pounds
  • Removable cover is machine washable

What We Didn’t Like

  • May not work for smaller windows

#6 Best Litter Box: Booda Dome Cleanstep Litter Box

The cat is inside the Booda Dome Cleanstep Litter Box

Kate Barrington / Cats.com

Though I appreciate the convenience of my Litter-Robot 4, it’s not practical in a multi-cat household for me to purchase several of them. My favorite standard litter box is the Petmate Booda Dome. Though this litter box takes up a lot of floor space, it works well in a corner and it’s big enough that I don’t have to refill the litter bed too often.

What I like best about this litter box is the ramp-style entry. My cats are getting older, and this litter box has a very senior-friendly design. It contains odors well and it’s easy enough to scoop by removing the lid. My main criticism is that urine spray sometimes gets stuck in the seam connecting the two halves.

What We Liked

  • Ramp-style entry for improved accessibility
  • Covered design helps contain odor
  • Generously sized for larger cats

What We Didn’t Like

  • Takes up a lot of floor space
  • Urine spray can get caught in the seam

#7 Best Grooming Tool: Catit Senses 2.0 Self-Groomer Cat Brush

Catit Senses 2.0 Self-Groomer Cat Brush

Kate Barrington / Cats.com

Cats love to scent-mark their territory by rubbing their faces on objects around the house. I have a couple of these self-groomer brushes in my home and all three of my cats seem to use them daily. They’re designed to be used on corners, so I have one at the top of the stairs and a few others on pieces of furniture on the main floor.

Not only do these self-groomers enable scent-marking for your cat, but they also offer hands-free grooming. They won’t take the place of a good old-fashioned session with a brush, but they help collect loose hair from your cat’s coat as they enjoy a soothing massage.

These self-groomers can be installed permanently with screws or you can use the included sticky pads. They also come with dried catnip to encourage your cat to use them.

What We Liked

  • Encourages natural scent-marking
  • Helps collect loose hair from your cat’s coat
  • Provides a soothing massage for your cat
  • Easy to install with screws or sticky pads

What We Didn’t Like

  • Sticky pads could be stronger

#8 Best Cat ID Tag: DOG iD Personalized Pet ID Tag

Testing the DOG iD2 collar tag

Biscuit tests out the tag. Kate Barrington / Cats.com

Earlier this year I spent some time testing pet ID tags, and this option is one of my favorites. It’s durably made from medical-grade stainless steel and slides onto your cat’s existing collar. Two rubber rings hold the tag in place and it comes in three colors: graphite, slate, and rose gold.

Not only is this one of the more attractive ID tags I tested, but it’s a noise-free option. Cats who don’t like the jingling of hanging tags may prefer something like this. The tag has space for up to four lines of text and it’s laser-engraved for long-lasting readability.

What We Liked

  • Accommodates up to 4 lines of text
  • Slides onto your cat’s existing collar
  • Sturdy stainless steel with rubber rings

What We Didn’t Like

  • Fairly pricey

#9 Best Cat Bed: Petmate Aspen Pet Self-Warming Bolster Cat Bed

Petmate Aspen Pet Self-Warming Bolster Cat Bed

MerlinsMom / Chewy.com

For the most part, my cats prefer to curl up on blankets rather than cat beds. Since I tucked it into the hideaway on one of the cat trees, however, my smallest cat, Munchkin, loves to sleep in her Aspen Pet self-warming bed.

The cozy faux lambswool provides a soft sleeping surface while a special interior layer reflects her body heat to keep her warm. This bed is stuffed with polyester filling and has a non-slip bottom to keep it in place. The whole bed is machine-washable for easy cleaning.

What We Liked

  • Covered in cozy faux lambswool
  • Special internal layer reflects body heat
  • Bolstered sides surround your cat in warmth

What We Didn’t Like

  • May lose shape if dried in a machine
  • Might be too small for large cats

#10 Best Litter Mat: PetFusion ToughGrip Gray Cat Litter Mat

PetFusion ToughGrip Gray Cat Litter Mat

Kate Barrington / Cats.com

I’ve given up hope that my floors will ever be completely free from loose cat litter, but placing litter mats under each litter box has made a big difference. I particularly like this ToughGrip mat from PetFusion because it’s very large and it stays where I put it.

Made from FDA-grade silicone, this litter mat is waterproof and stain-resistant. It’s a little heavy, but the weight combined with the silicone materials provides an anti-slip benefit. Raised edges around the outside help keep mess contained while elevated inner ridges help catch loose litter sticking to your cat’s paws.

What We Liked

  • Comes in two large sizes
  • Waterproof, stain-resistant, and anti-slip
  • Raised edges keep loose litter contained

What We Didn’t Like

  • Somewhat pricey
