Note: the Findster Duo+ as reviewed in this article has been discontinued and is no longer available. We will be monitoring this situation and will update the article if and when the company releases a new product.

The Findster Duo + is a GPS pet tracker that does not rely on cell coverage. You are able to track your cat anywhere outdoors without incurring monthly fees.

Testing Out The Findster Duo +

In this article, we will go in-depth on how well the Findster Duo + tracks, how consistent it is, how long its battery lasts, and how well it works when testing in a real-world situation.

Before we jump into our experience with the Findster Duo +, let’s talk more about this tracker and how it works.

Findster Duo + is different from other GPS trackers because it doesn’t require cell service. Typically trackers need cell service to transmit a signal from the device on the cat to your phone.

Opening the box you will see two modules, and one part attaches to your cat’s collar and communicates with GPS satellites while the guardian module uses  MAZE technology to communicate wirelessly within a radius of 3 miles.

The guardian module acts as a gateway between the tracker and your smartphone which then provides you information transmitted from the tracker to the Findster Duo + app.

Getting Started With Using The Findster Duo +

The Findster Duo + comes in a cute little box with both the guardian and the tracking module. It also comes with a charger but no ac adapter.

There is also a band that allows you to attach the tracker to your cat’s collar as well as a set up guide.

You will need to charge both modules fully before you can use them and that can take a couple hours.

Once everything is charged and ready to go, you will need to download the Findster Duo + app. You need to pair the modules with the app and then you can set up profiles for your cat.

What Did My Cat Think Of The Findster Duo +?

FindsterDuo.Wessie

The Findster tracking module is relatively large, but my cat, Wessie, seemed comfortable with it. Mallory Crusta / Cats.com

The tracker needs to be attached to your cat’s collar. It seems large and takes up a lot of space around my cat’s neck. He didn’t seem to mind wearing it though and went about his daily activities around the house with it on.

Using The Tracker

When using a GPS tracking device I always look at how frequently it updates and how well you are able to track your cat’s movement on the map. The map inside the app does show your cat’s location and updates about every ten seconds.

After testing it a number of times, I noticed it disconnected a number of times like most trackers but would re-connect very quickly.

Tracking in Findster App

Using the Findster app, I was generally able to track my cat’s movement via GPS signal. Mallory Crusta / Cats.com

When using the app it was pretty easy to find the tracker and see where it was located. However, there is a limitation to this and all GPS trackers and that is that they are not going to be able to bring you directly to your cat. GPS can get you in the general area when following the tracker.

The app does provide a radar screen to fine-tune your positioning and help find your tracking module. This is helpful in getting closer to your cat in case he is hiding.

How Accurate Is The Findster Duo +

The GPS isn’t perfect and in more woody areas it is less accurate. Compared to other GPS trackers, it does excel.

The maze technology means a smaller detection area because this is needed to connect to the modules rather than a cell connection.

The Features Of The Findster Duo +

Before letting your cat wander you will need to “start a walk” in the app to start tracking. This means being near your cat when starting this feature. The problem is, if you cat takes off and you haven’t started this feature, this device is pretty useless.

You do have the option to create a virtual fence within the app. This means marking off safe zones and being alerted when your cat has crossed over one. But again, if you are not tracking your cat then the safe zones are not affective at all.

You are also able to track activity within the app. This tells you how much time your cat has spent walking, resting, how far he has gone and how many steps he has taken over the past week.

What’s The Battery Life Like?

Charging the Findster

The Findster Duo + doesn’t have the best battery life. This means if you are using the GPS tracking continuously, then you can expect the battery to last up to 12 hours. If you are using it as an activity tracker then you can expect your battery to last about  7 days.

How Much Does The Findster Duo + Cost?

If you order the Findster Duo + tracker complete with the guardian module and the pet module is going to cost you $104.99. But if you were to purchase two pet trackers it will cost you $139.99 and three is $174.99.

These prices are sales prices and it is unknown when that price may jump back up.

What Is Findster Care Service?

This service is included with your purchase and you will get a 30-day free trial. Once the trial is up, you will pay $3.99 a month to keep the service. You are able to cancel if you are not interested before the trial is up.

This service provides you with the help of veterinarians who keep an eye on your pet through Findster Duo + monitoring. It allows them to monitor your cat and give you a heads-up if they see any abnormalities in your cat’s health.

This means the Findster Duo + isn’t just an activity tracking and monitoring device but one that enables you to detect any health problems your pet may be facing.

Overall, Is The Findster Duo + Worth It?

It may be a good choice but really depends on what you want to get out of it. The good news is this device allows you to use GPS without paying for a monthly plan. Other positive features are the fact it can pick up your cat’s location up to 3 miles away, anywhere, and it uses MAZE technology meaning you don’t need a cell connection.

It also features radar tracking to help you narrow down your cat’s location.

The biggest downfall of this tracker is you can not track your cat unless you have initiated tracking prior to your cat wandering off. You are also not able to use this device indoors obviously because it uses GPS technology.

This tracker is also rather large and some cats may not like wearing it. Small or sensitive cats may not do well with it.

This device would be perfect for those who go on walks with their cats and just want some peace of mind knowing that if the cat runs off, you will be able to find them quickly.

Discontinued? Not as far as I’m aware! This sort of misinformation could seriously hurt findster’s business! My tracker not only still works, but their store still seems to be selling the product.

Hi Ross, that’s curious! We were told via direct communication with the brand that the product was being discontinued, and that Findster was moving to the Maven brand. When I double-checked the site, it definitely appeared that the Findster Duo+ was no longer available for sale.

I’m finding this too, and have been for quite a while. And while it doesn’t affect the current operation of my Findster Duo pet system, it does affect customer support. They don’t seem to be responding at all!

Very interesting. Both my pet tracker modules won’t sync to the GPS signal and have tried to contact customer service vie web form with no luck.

I do wish these companies could get their company act together before coming to market. This such a beautifully designed product that has worked very well for me on a small wandering terrier. It’s so reassuring to know that he’s still moving when under a blanket of gourse and not trapped. Such a pity to see it discontinued.
