Litter box odor is probably the hardest part of living with a cat. The average cat visits the litter box approximately 5 times a day. That number is even higher if you have kittens.

So why does it smell so bad? First of all, a cat’s urine is more concentrated than many other domestic species. Urine can leave behind a strong ammonia smell once it sits in litter. There is a way to manage the litter box odor and it’s called the Purrified Air Cat Litter Box Air Filter.

What Is The Purrified Air Cat Litter Box Air Filter?

The Purrified Air filter is a small box that attaches to the top of most covered cat litter boxes. It works best on flat topped litter boxes and can be placed right on top of the vents (If your litter box does not have a flat top, there are adapters available).

A blend of activated carbon, zeolite, catechin, and negative-ion ceramic balls make up the internal cartridge. The filer fan itself is continually running to keep cat odor at bay.

Some of its features are:

  • Reduces all forms of cat waste odor to undetectable levels
  • Fits almost all types of covered litter boxes and ferret cages
  • Combines several proven odor-destroying technologies
  • Designed for “always on” mode to ensure continuously odorless air
  • Greatly reduces allergens, bacteria, and viruses in your air
  • Easy-to-replace cartridges last 4-7 months, has 2-1/2 pounds of filter media.
  • Dimensions: 9-3/8″ x 9-3/8″ x 4-1/4″ tall.

How To Set Up Purrified Air?

Once your Purrified Air filter arrives, it takes just a few minutes to set up. Once unpacked, remove plastic from cartridge. Open the top of the filter box and place the cartridge inside. Re attach filter lid with side screws and it is ready to go. You litter box will need to be near an electrical outlet to plug the system into.

If your current litter box has vents, you will want to remove any existing filter pads before placing the filter unit in place. It is recommended you clean the area where the air filter will sit. On the bottom of the filter unit are Velcro stickers to attach to the litter box top. This will help it stay in place over the vent holes and keep your cat from knocking it around.

If your litter box top has a generally flat surface and a vent, it will work. If you have a litter box with a flat top but no vent, you will need to cut vent holes into the top and place the Purrified Air filter right over the holes.

If you have a dome shaped litter box, don’t worry. Purrified Air makes an adapter to hold the filter on top. They also make a mobile unit holder for placing the filter in places other than the litter box lid, like a counter top or mounted to a wall.

Once the filter is plugged in, it begins working. It is designed for continuous use and should be left running at all times. It draws about 2.4 watts, so the cost to operate is minimal. The fan is rated for a minimum of 40,000 hours, or four-and-a-half years of continuous service.

You will need to replace the cartridge in 4 to 7 months, depending on your cats use. Honestly my filter lasted much longer and I have two cats using the litter box.

The contents of the Purrified Air cartridge are mostly organic and when it is time to dispose of it, cut it open and toss it in your garden, fire pit, trash can or yard waste. The shell of the cartridge is made from PVC based plastic and is recyclable.

How Does Purrified Air Compare to Other Filters?

Purrified Air has from 6 to 90 times more filter media, and 11 to 54 times more air flow than their competition. Two of the products in the chart below, Kitty Vac and Purr-Fect-Air, used no zeolite, making them virtually useless against ammonia, the main odor-causing chemical in animal waste.

How It Works?

The Purrified Air litter box air filter has a five-stage air filtration, using a combination cutting-edge and tried-and-true technologies. Configured in a highly effective cartridge, it combines the right quantities and sequences of filter media.

Stage 1 – a filter pad blocks dust from kicked-up litter from clogging later media stages and from escaping the litter box.

Stage two – The filter pad is treated with a chemical called catechin. It is derived from green tea.

Stage 3 through 5 – A proprietary blend of more than two full pounds activated carbon, zeolite and negative ion ceramic balls. Activated carbon, in the right quantity and with the right air flow through it removes almost all VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) such as those found in cat waste. Zeolite is particularly effective against the odor-causing ammonia in cat urine. Tourmaline ionic balls are used because of their effectiveness in killing odor-causing bacteria.

This system is able to control cat odor because of the always-running, ultra-quiet fan. The fan is just powerful enough to capture all air in the litter box and force it through the filter cartridge and slow enough to be quiet and for foul odors to have more time to react with filter media. It works by drawing air through the carbon and forcing it out through the top.

The Purrified Air filter is designed to eliminate all Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that pass through it which does not limit it to only litter boxes.

A basic definition of VOCs is all things that smell. Any household odors from cooking, bathrooms, garbage, paint, strong cleaning chemicals, smoke, and fire places will be greatly reduced by placing the filter in the vicinity. Our combination wall-mount bracket and table-top cradle makes this easy and effective.

  • Quiet fan
  • Fits most litter boxes
  • Reduces smells, allergens and bacteria
  • Very easy to set up
  • One year warranty

  • A bit pricey as far as litter box filters go

How Much Does The Purrified Air Cost?

The Purrified Air Filter on the Purrified Air site costs $129.99. If you want to buy 2 units, you can save 10%, 3 units 15% and 4 units will save you 20%.

The replacement filters are also available on the website for $32.99 or on Amazon. You can also save money by buying more than one at a time.

Is Purrified Air A Good Choice?

Yes! I have been using this purifier for over a year and love it. After trying many types of scented litters, filtered litter boxes and purifiers that did very little to remove the odor, this thing is a life saver! I could not go back to a basic litter box after using the Purrified Air.

When I first tried it, I was skeptical of this little unit that sits on my cats litter box. But within an hour of installing it, I could not smell a thing and have not since then!

Some cats may find the sound of the fan off putting but it’s really quiet. My cats are now used to it after more than a year of use. The only issue I have now is remembering to clean the box as often because I no longer have a foul smell to remind me.

If you are frustrated with the odor coming from your cats litter and have tried everything else out there, this is well worth the investment. Plug it in and in 4 to 7 months you will only need to replace the filter cartridge, depending on use.
