Automatic litter boxes promise to set cat owners free from scooping, and most of them deliver on this promise. But if you’re going to invest in one of these devices, it’s worth taking the time to ensure you’re choosing the right one.

Today, we’ll compare and contrast two popular models: the Litter-Robot 5 from Whisker and the Meowant SC02. Let’s dive into the details to determine which one is the better fit for your cat!

Whisker, the brand behind the Litter-Robot, was founded by engineer Brad Baxter in 2000. One of the first automatic litter boxes to hit the market, the original Litter-Robot introduced a rotating globe automatic litter box design to eliminate manual scooping. Over 25 years later, the Litter-Robot is in its fifth iteration and the brand has become a household name among cat owners.

Meowant is newer to the market than Whisker but still has over a decade of history in the industry. Established in 2013, Meowant offers several self-cleaning litter boxes that utilize similar sifting and rotating technology to the Litter-Robot.

The Meowant SC01, the brand’s flagship automatic litter box, is the most similar to the Litter-Robot in form and function. It’s an enclosed litter box with a circular opening that rotates on the X-axis (side to side) during a cleaning cycle. The SC02 (and the larger SC09) has a boxier design, a much wider opening, and rotates on the Y-axis (front to back) during a cleaning cycle.

Both Whisker and Meowant focus entirely on pet products. Whisker primarily offers products for cats (litter boxes, automatic feeders, and litter) while Meowant has a few products for dogs as well (like grooming kits and a GPS fence).

Features and Specifications

The Litter-Robot 5 is one of three models released by Whisker in late 2025. It’s an upgrade to the still-popular Litter-Robot 4, featuring updated sensor technology, AI health tracking for cats, and practical improvements to the build and app. The Litter-Robot 5 is also available in a premium model, the Litter-Robot 5 Pro, which is equipped with dual cameras for visual identification through the smart litter box app.

Though technically a covered litter box, the Litter-Robot 5 features a large circular opening and a generously sized interior. It works well for cats weighing up to 30 pounds and is particularly well-suited to multi-cat households. The upgraded weight sensor accurately distinguishes between individual cats and records usage data and health insights under each cat’s profile in the Whisker app.

Here are a few key details you should know about the Litter-Robot 5:

LitterRobot5-

  • Footprint is 22.2” by 27.25” by 29.9”
  • Large waste drawer is located in the base
  • Cats must use a built-in step to get into the unit
  • Has 5 buttons and an LCD screen on top
  • Minimal setup required and easy to pair with the app

Placed side by side, the Meowant SC01 looks almost like a smaller, simpler version of the Litter-Robot with its round design and clockwise rotation. The Meowant SC02 incorporates more of the cat-friendly features for which the Litter-Robot is known. Its spacious interior and wide opening better accommodate larger-than-average cats. Like the Litter-Robot 5, it also comes with a detachable litter fence to help reduce litter scatter.

The Meowant SC02 has a smaller footprint than the Litter-Robot 5 and a much smaller waste drawer, but it’s still discreetly concealed in the housing to help with odor control. Because the unit is smaller, cats can step directly from the floor into the litter bed without much trouble. Some cat owners credit this feature for their cat’s quick transition from traditional litter boxes.

Here are a few key details you should know about the Meowant SC02:

  • Footprint is 19.92” by 19.3” by 21.45”
  • Smaller litter bin is hidden in the side of the housing
  • Cats can easily step from the floor into the litter bed
  • Has two buttons and an LED indicator light on the front
  • Fairly quick to set up and pair with the app

Both the Litter-Robot 5 and all Meowant litter boxes work best with clumping cat litter. Whisker specifically recommends hard-clumping clay litter while Meowant says you can use clay, tofu, crystal, or mixed cat litter (as long as the granules are smaller than 0.59 inches).

Price and Performance

The Litter-Robot 5 is one of the most advanced automatic litter boxes on the market, retailing for $799 (or $899 if you spring for the Pro model), but you get what you pay for. Whisker designs products to be both user-friendly and cat-friendly with consistently positive reviews.

The Litter-Robot performs reliably (and quietly) and delivers exceptional litter box odor control, even in multi-cat households. Each new model goes through some growing pains when first released, but Whisker is constantly releasing firmware updates to resolve glitches. And Litter-Robots have a strong reputation for safety.

Buying a Meowant litter box is still going to be a significant investment, but frequent promotions make these units more affordable. The SC02 retails for about $600 but is often discounted by $200–$350. The SC01 is similarly priced but, with the right promotions, can end up costing under $300.

Meowant’s automatic litter boxes may not have the same sleek styling or premium features as the Litter-Robot 5, but they seem to work well and some cats clearly prefer them. Where Meowant seems to fall behind Whisker is in the customer service department, according to consumer reviews.

What Did Our Test Cats Think?

LR5vsMeowant4-

Kate Barrington / Cats.com

Our test cats, Munchkin and Biscuit, are a little smaller than the average cat and Munchkin is burdened by arthritis. Biscuit tends to prefer standard litter boxes over automatic models while Munchkin seems to appreciate having a fresh litter bed for every visit.

Though she struggles a little to get in and out of the Litter-Robot 5, Munchkin still prefers it over just about anything else. Removing the detachable litter fence makes it much more accessible, though it does increase litter scatter. Munchkin also took to the Meowant SC02 pretty quickly and Biscuit used it about as frequently as she used the Litter-Robot 5 (not very often).

Both units performed their self-cleaning functions reliably and they were very easy to operate. They were simple to pair with the respective apps and were pretty accurate in identifying each cat by weight. The Whisker app provides more detailed insights than Meowant’s but long-term data tracking is available via a Whisker+ membership ($7.99/mo or $79.99/year).

In terms of cat-friendliness, both the Litter-Robot 5 and Meowant SC02 do pretty well. Meowant’s SC02 is an improvement over the SC01 in interior space and openness, but the SC01 may be perfectly comfortable for smaller cats. The SC02 is certainly easier to access than the Litter-Robot 5 but cats without mobility restrictions should have no trouble using the step built into the base. Overall, the Litter-Robot 5’s larger size and options for accessibility make it a cat-friendly option for a wider variety of cats than either Meowant model.

In the area of user-friendliness, both units were quick to set up and easy to use. The most significant differences were noticeable around cleanup. Of the two models, the Litter-Robot 5’s waste bin is significantly larger and easier to empty. The Meowant SC02’s waste bin is hidden behind a panel, and because it’s smaller, it needed to be emptied more frequently. Also, the lid sometimes clogged with dirty litter, which added another step to the cleaning process.

When it comes to user-friendliness and cleanup, the Litter-Robot 5 has the edge over the Meowant SC02. Seemingly small factors like waste bin size and design features that help optimize cleanup may become increasingly noticeable over time.

For example, litter tended to stick in the corners of the Meowant SC02’s squared globe more than the Litter-Robot 5’s round one. As other reviewers have mentioned, there’s also little protection against urine spray on the SC02. There are exposed screws in the liner and the low entry makes it easy for cats to pee over the edge. This can happen with the Litter-Robot 5 too, but Whisker tweaked the design to protect the electrical components against urine leaks.

Deep-cleaning either the Litter-Robot 5 or the Meowant SC02 takes a little time. Because you can empty the litter bed on the Litter-Robot 5 directly into the waste drawer, however, it’s easy enough to wipe down the inside of the globe. With the Meowant SC02, you have to install a separate piece to empty the litter bed before cleaning the unit.

Which One Is Right for Your Cat?

When it comes to deciding between automatic litter boxes like Meowant and Litter-Robot, certain factors might make the choice seem obvious. If your main concerns are price and space, the Meowant might sound like your best bet. Due to the smaller waste drawer and minor design flaws inside the globe that can make cleaning more complicated, you may be better off with the thoughtfully designed Litter-Robot 5.

If you’re looking to make a long-term investment, the Litter-Robot 5 simply has more staying power than the Meowant SC02. Whisker has a long history of customer satisfaction and appears to be more actively involved in addressing customer concerns. The Litter-Robot 5 may also be the better choice if you’re interested in tracking long-term data trends to monitor your cat’s health.

Of the two, we recommend the Litter-Robot 5 for its reliable performance, generous array of features, and strong customer satisfaction scores.

In short, there’s no perfect automatic litter box for every household. Think about your budget, the space you have available, your cat’s personal preferences, and practical factors like setup and cleaning to make your choice.
