With all the political conflict in America over immigration policy, one cat by the northern border with Canada has no qualms about doing illegal crossings every day. And this furry scofflaw has gone viral over his border-jumping shenanigans!
The cat – a medium-haired, fluffy brown tabby and white feline, with the stylish name Louis Vuitton – lives with his family on Zero Avenue in South Surrey, British Columbia. Bordering this street is a narrow and shallow ditch, with Peace Arch Historical State Park in Blaine, Washington on the U.S. side of the border.
As an international border, immigration law enforcement patrols the area and signs warn people not to cross over to the other country. But since when do cats obey rules? Not Louis Vuitton, who loves strolling around the neighborhood and leaping across the border ditch, often several times a day. The handsome, 5-year-old cat, who looks like a Norwegian Forest Cat, is super friendly and likes to visit people in both countries, his human says.
“He hasn’t always been such a rebel, but he is extremely friendly,” Deb Tate tells CBC Radio. “He will walk up, greet people, get his pats and belly rubs, and then continue on when he’s done.”
Deb says her precocious cat, who is rescued, even smuggles prey across the border, like snakes and mice and squirrels, and drops them on her doorstep. Eew!
She named her cat after the fashion icon known especially for high-end handbags because, as a rescue, Louis Vuitton came from humble beginnings and he deserved a high-style upgrade with a designer name.
“We just named him Louis and … he has just grown in to fill the personality, and more.
The cat’s border-hopping story went viral. The Instagram page for PNW Daily posted a video of Louis, showing the ditch he jumps up close. The man speaking in the viral video, which has more than 241K likes, stands on the U.S. side and shows us the street and houses just on the other side of the shallow border ditch, which looks to be just a few feet deep.
“There’s a cat that doesn’t really give a f!@# about borders, and he comes over and hunts the ditch,” he says, as he points out nearby Canadian border patrol agents.
Then, we see a cat running toward the speaker, who starts petting the handsome cat when he arrives.
“There he is! What’s up, buddy?” he exclaims. “Louis! What’s up, my boy?”
Some of the comments on the video are very clever, like this one: “Louis has dual Kitizenship.”
Another Instagram user added this: “Keeping the border rat free from both sides. Good job Louis.”
The news station King5 Seattle posted a reel of Louis in action that got more than 293K likes.
“Across the border in British Columbia up in Canada, a cuddly culprit seems to be ignoring international law on a daily basis,” an anchor says.
Among residents, the news anchor says, Louis is something of a legend. And they had funny things to say about him to the camera.
“He kind of flaunts his recklessness for the law,” one neighbor says, laughing. Another neighbor offers this cute pun: Louis has a “paws-port.”
Often, when cats make headlines, it is due to a heartbreaking reason, albeit these rescue stories often have a happy ending. Sometimes, like in the case of Louis Vuitton, cats make the news for being funny, quirky, and often crafty.
We wrote about a black cat named Goose who had figured out how to scam the toddler in his family by manipulating the child into opening the food container and giving him a few extra scoops. What a smart stinker!
And then there’s Mika, a cat who pulls her human mom around when she is walking on her harness – just like a dog! Like Louis Vuitton, Mika loves people and tries to befriend any people and animals she encounters. A tuxedo cat named Socks became an interloper in a neighbor’s house at Christmas time, when he flopped down in front of the family’s Christmas tree and fooled them into thinking he was their own tuxedo cat named Archer.
We are cheering on Louis Vuitton for his daily legal violations – all in good fun in a cat’s world – and we look forward to bringing you more stories about bold and entertaining cats.

Just wondering if this is a branch of law worth pawing into…
