I love the highly popular Litter Genie pails, and I have two of them in two different styles in my house of six cats. The pails save me a lot of hassle and eliminate the need for plastic grocery bags. So, I was eager to try out the new Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter, which Litter Genie promotes as the completion to a full product line of cat bathroom products.

With litter pails, refill bags, litter boxes, accessories, and now cat litter, fans of Litter Genie can stick with one brand for all their cat’s waste-elimination and litter-disposal needs.

Ratings

  • Price Per Pound – 4/5
  • Multi-Cat Formulas – 1/5
  • Clumping Ability – 3/5
  • Dust/Mess – 3/5
  • Easy to Scoop – 4/5

Overall Score: 3/5

For full disclosure, I had pretty much ruled out the lightweight clay litter trend in my own household before trying this new one. As easy as it is to carry, litters in the lightweight category just don’t clump as firmly as traditional clay clumping litter. That is the drawback.

That said, despite those shortcomings, I do see benefits to Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter and consider it one of the better lightweight litters available.

How We Tested:

  • We purchased a large box of Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter.
  • We spent a few weeks testing the litter on several cats (six, in my household).
  • We did not receive these products in exchange for a favorable review; they were purchased with our own money.

Brand Overview

Back in 2012, Litter Genie debuted with its first litter pail, which works like a convenient litter locker that makes cleanup after scooping much easier. We scoop the waste into a reservoir at the top of the pail underneath a lid, and pull out a handle. The waste falls into a bag below that lines the pail, and once you push the handle back in, the smelly waste is locked away. You don’t have to deal with it for a while, and you only throw it in the trash when the bag is full.

With the launch of the new litter, Litter Genie becomes the only brand that offers a complete cat waste-management system, with the litter pails, the litter boxes, and now the lightweight litter. The company makes this claim and I see nothing that refutes it. If you prefer to stick with a single brand, Litter Genie now offers nearly everything needed for cat-waste management.

Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter Features

This unscented formula is made with natural sodium bentonite clay and is 20% lighter than traditional clay litters, which makes it easier to lift, store, and pour. Lifting a 32-pound box, like the Litter Genie box I bought, is still heavy – heavier than I expected for a lightweight formula – but you get more lightweight litter in that 32 pounds than you would the heavier clumping litter.

What We Like

  • It is 20% lighter than traditional clumping clay litter and easier to carry
  • The cats like it
  • It is 99% dust free
  • The reasonable price – about $17.99 for a 32-pound box, and $12.99 for a 12-pound box – beats many competitors
  • Odor control is good
  • Some boxes sold from Walmart come with a nice freebie: a 9-foot bag refill

What We Don’t Like

  • Lightweight clay litters like this do not clump as firmly as traditional clumping clay litters. You do get a fairly solid central clump, but little pieces and crumbles break off
  • With many wet litter pieces separating from clumps and falling into the litter box, you have to dump and wash the box more often
  • As is characteristic of clay-based litters, this litter tracks and can get messy outside the box

What Did the Test Cats Think?

I have a Brady Bunch of a half dozen cats at my house and several litter boxes, with two filled with clumping clay – one in the common litter area, and the other in a private bedroom – two filled with pine litters, and two others as wild-card boxes where I rotate different litters.

While the cats are willing to use litters made of other materials, clumping clay litter is the top choice for all of my cats, apparently. The boxes with clay always have more waste than the others, especially “number two.” To do this review, I replaced my usual traditional clumping clay litter in the main litter room (the laundry room) with the Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter for a few weeks.

The cats showed no objection to the switch, and they still used the clay litter more than any other box filler I have. So for my cats, that is a strong paws-up vote.

What Do Customers Think of Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter?

Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter is available at Chewy, Walmart and Amazon, and we checked out reviews on each website. On Chewy, the litter has about a 3.5 star rating out of five. Some customers said the litter was very dusty, but I did not find that at all. Some said the litter was superior to what they used before, and that the odor control was great. Some customers commented about the clumps easily breaking into smaller pieces, an experience I had, too. Overall, 53% of the customers rated the litter with four or five stars on Chewy.

On the Walmart website, reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with 93% of customers rating the litter with four or five stars, 4% rating it three stars, and just 4% rating it low with two or one stars. On Amazon, 68% of customers gave Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter four or five stars, 11% gave it three stars, and 21% gave it one or two stars.

One common complaint about Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter is that it comes inside an unsealed bag placed within the box. This caused a messy opening experience with many customers, and we hope the manufacturer will consider sealing future bags.

Positive Reviews

“This litter is awesome. it is light and easy to use. It’s great for multiple cat households because it lasts so much longer! It works great with my Litter Genie too.” by ken,  reviewing Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter on May 11, 2026

“I’m a big fan of the Litter Genie Pails and when I heard that they were offering a clay based cat litter I had to give it a try. Most clay litters I have tried are usually the same when it comes to dust and clumpability.
I really was impressed with how light the litter was. It felt like I was using less than the litter I used prior. The clumpability was way above average. Overall the quality was surprisingly positive and for the price a great bargain. Looks like I will be changing my litter to Litter Genie moving forward!” by Eric Jodoin,  reviewing Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter on May 7, 2026

Negative Reviews

“Like a few other reviewers, got 22 lbs for free as part of a deal. Tried it out and deeply regretted it. SO DUSTY.” by Victoria,  reviewing Litter Genie Light Clumping Litter on May 29, 2026
