Have you ever met a cat who barks like a dog? Mugan the Maine Coon is a unique cat who has so many dog friends that he learned how to mimic them!
We talked to Mugan’s parents about their adventure cat to learn more about his story, and the advice they have for others who’d like to harness-train their cats.
A Barking Cat?!

When Mugan barked for the first time, his parents weren’t sure what they were hearing. Then, they caught it again on camera and were able to play it back. His mom says that she kept replaying it until she was certain that he made a quiet “arf” sound.
According to Mugan’s dad, “He’s a little dog cat.” He gets along well with dogs, and spends a lot of time around them.
Since he’s an adventure cat, people have even told his parents that they treat him like a dog. Mugan walks on leash, goes for hikes, and even likes to doggy paddle in the water.
A Perfect Match

Mugan was adopted from Vancouver Island. His parents asked for a social and outgoing kitten, and were matched with him!
He was already well-socialized, and his parents continued introducing him to new experiences after his adoption. They say he’s always been relaxed and well-behaved.
Mugan might be even more of a “people person” than his parents, and has definitely brought them out of their shells! His mom says he’s the most social of the three of them.
He prefers to stay close to his mom or dad at all times, even at home. If they aren’t paying him enough attention, he races into the room and flops onto his back to ask for belly rubs.
When they’re out and about, his mom is surprised how many people approach them. Everyone wants to love on Mugan and tell his parents about their own cats, which is a lot of fun for them. They wouldn’t have gone out of their way to talk to strangers before, but now it happens every time they’re out!
Providing Safe Outdoor Adventures for Cats

Both of Mugan’s parents love spending time outside, so their goal with his adoption was to have a companion to share their adventures with. They love that whether they’re camping or going for a hike in the mountains, they can bring Mugan along.
Their favorite thing is seeing how happy he is to explore the world. It’s taught them to take in all the small details, embrace the present moment, and never take anything for granted.
By sharing Mugan’s story, they hope that they can inspire others to get out there with their cats! Going on safe, supervised outdoor adventures provides cats with enrichment and makes their lives fuller–even if you’re only venturing into your own backyard.
Mugan shows us that cats can do anything dogs can do–even bark!
