Marv the cat is living the best of both worlds. He’s a pampered housecat who gets lots of love and treats, but he’s also an adventure cat who loves to explore the outdoors on his harness and leash!
Today, we’re sharing Marv’s story as well as some advice on providing safe outdoor enrichment for your own cat.
“He Literally Thinks He’s a Dog!”
Many people compare adventure cats to dogs, because we aren’t used to seeing cats walking outside on leashes. But many cats thrive when given the opportunity to explore and socialize, especially from a young age.
Marv’s family adopted him when his human was just six years old. Some family friends invited them to visit their litter of kittens, so they went “just to look.”
“Big mistake,” she says. But, of course, she clarifies, “Not you, Marv!” He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to her!
In the end, her entire family was begging her dad to allow them to adopt a kitten from the litter. And that’s how they ended up with Marv.
Exploring Their Little Slice of the World

Marv goes outside in his cat backpack. He also wears a harness and leash so that he can walk around and explore fully. It’s a great way to provide him with new sights and smells, and prevents him from becoming too bored in the house.
By only venturing outdoors when he can be supervised, he also stays safe from predators, cars, and other threats.
Most of their adventures are local for now, but he and his person dream of visiting Mexico or Hawaii together–someplace warm where he can sunbathe all day, since that’s his absolute favorite! She also thinks he would enjoy digging in the sand and interacting with the ocean, since he shows a lot of curiosity about water.
Providing Outdoor Enrichment for Cats

We often see adventure cats traveling the globe, climbing mountains and swimming at the beach. Those stories are incredible, but stories like Marv’s show that outdoor enrichment is attainable for the average person, too!
Cats don’t need to go far to have fun. Marv has a porch swing he loves to sunbathe on in the backyard, and he comes running when asked if he wants to go outside.
Your cat’s outdoor adventures can start with a small catio, or exploring just outside the house. I had a cat who didn’t often go further than our front step, but still enjoyed getting to feel the sun and wind on his face.
For true homebodies, even a window and a bird feeder can provide so much enrichment! There’s no right or wrong way to provide new experiences, so long as you put safety first and follow your cat’s lead.
