Want to keep an eye on your cat when they’re out of sight? Or be able to find your cat quickly if they accidentally slip outside? The Tractive CAT Mini, a wearable GPS tracker, offers pet parents peace of mind with real-time tracking powered by GPS and unlimited LTE coverage.

In this review, we’ll discuss the Tractive CAT Mini in depth, exploring its features, how well it works in real-world testing, and whether we recommend it.

Why Trust Cats.com

We’ve been keeping tabs on Tractive over the years, putting its popular cat trackers to the test each time a new model is released. At this point, several members of our team have tested various Tractive trackers with their own cats in real-world settings at home—included the Tractive CAT Mini.

The Tractive CAT Mini is the culmination of years of research and development, informed by customer feedback and influenced by developments in tracking technology. While this review is focused primarily on Tractive’s latest cat tracker, it takes into account our team’s experience with previous models and the brand as a whole.

Tractive is an Austrian technology company that was founded in 2012 by Michael Hurnaus, Michael Lettner, and Michael Tschernuth. From the start, Tractive’s mission was to develop GPS tracking devices for pets. Tractive’s first-generation pet tracker was released in 2014, when it was named “Innovation of the Year” by the Austrian Futurezone Awards.

While still headquartered in Pasching, Austria, Tractive launched a North American subsidiary in Seattle, Washington in 2020. A few years later, in 2025, Tractive acquired Whistle, a pet technology company based in the United States. Following the acquisition, Tractive’s pet tracking devices were relaunched with upgraded health tracking features and the latest GPS tracking technology.

Tractive currently offers two pet trackers—one for dogs and one for cats. The Tractive CAT Mini combines GPS tracking features like real-time location tracking and virtual fences with health alerts and activity monitoring. It’s connected to a broad, multi-carrier LTE network that enables you to track your cat in over 175 countries worldwide.

The Tractive CAT Mini is made specifically for cats, and it’s one of the most compact, full-featured models on the market. Usable for live locating as well as activity monitoring, it’s a versatile device designed to help pet parents keep their cats safe while providing valuable insights into their health and activity.

Tractive CAT Mini Features

At first glance, the Tractive CAT Mini looks like a miniature candy bar. It’s a rectangular device that measures about 2 inches long, 1 inch wide, and ½ inch thick. The tracker comes with a rigid plastic holder as well as a reflective breakaway collar to mount it on. In contrast to previous Tractive models, you can leave the holder on your cat’s collar and separate the device easily for charging purposes.

To activate the Tractive CAT Mini’s built-in SIM card, you’ll need to purchase a subscription plan. The shortest plan available is 1 year, billed at $108 for the Basic Plan or $120 for the Premium Plan. Both plans include GPS location tracking, unlimited live tracking, and activity & sleep monitoring. The Premium Plan (available in 1-, 2-, and 5-year subscriptions) enables family sharing, expanded worldwide coverage, 365-day location history, and GPS data export.

Once your plan is activated, you can start using the Tractive app to track your cat and view their location history. You can also create virtual fences to designate Safe Zones (boundaries you’d like your cat to stay within) and No-Go Zones (areas that are off-limits for your cat). If your cat leaves the Safe Zone or enters a No-Go Zone, you’ll get an alert through the app.

The premier feature of the Tractive CAT Mini is its Live Tracking function. When activated, this function uses a combination of GPS and LTE connectivity to identify your cat’s location on a map with updates every 2–3 seconds. The map shows your phone’s location along with an approximate distance and compass direction from the tracker’s location. As you get closer to the tracker, you can use the Bluetooth-powered Radar function to activate a glowing light and audible ringtone to help you zoom in on the exact position.

Outside of tracking, the Tractive CAT Mini also offers limited health and activity monitoring. In the app, you can view daily insights like how much time your cat spends active versus sleeping. After at least seven days of continuous wear, the app will send you alerts if it detects changes in your cat’s sleep or activity habits. These insights can help clue you in to potential issues like pain or stress that might not be outwardly apparent.

What We Like:

  • Track your cat’s location in real time with no distance limit
  • Set virtual fences and get an alert when your cat strays too far
  • Monitor your cat’s activity levels and sleep habits
  • Get alerts when the app detects a change in your cat’s routine
  • View your cat’s past routes and favorite spots using the app
  • Battery lasts up to 5 days in Power Save mode
  • Includes a reflective breakaway collar to mount the tracker

What We Dislike:

  • Battery drains more quickly when live tracking is kept active
  • Annual subscription is required (no monthly option available)
  • Tracker is not recommended for cats weighing under 7 pounds

What Did Our Test Cats Think?

TractiveMini

Kate Barrington / Cats.com

My initial impression of the Tractive CAT Mini was that it’s very thoughtfully designed. The packaging is intuitive, the device attractive, and the app very easy to navigate. It took me less than five minutes to download the app, activate my subscription, and start using the tracker.

I have pretty limited experience with pet trackers in general but the Tractive CAT Mini exceeded my expectations. I was worried it might take a while to get the hang of it, but it’s clear that Tractive took the best qualities from their previous models and combined them with customer feedback to create a tracker that’s reliable and simple to operate.

To test the tracker, I enlisted the help of my larger cat, Biscuit. She weighs about 9 pounds and didn’t seem to mind wearing the tracker as long as I kept the collar loose enough that it didn’t snag on her fur. The activity and sleep monitoring functions seemed to work as advertised, though she hasn’t been wearing the tracker long enough to trigger any health alerts yet.

When I first powered the Tractive CAT Mini on and activated live tracking mode, it took a few minutes for the map to show the tracker and my phone in the same location. Several customer reviews mention the potential for GPS interference when using the tracker indoors, which could explain it. In outdoor testing, I found both the Live Track and Radar modes to be very reliable. I did think the light could’ve been brighter and the sound louder, but these functions are intended to be used at close range anyway.

After reading customer reviews for the Tractive CAT Mini, I was particularly curious to see how the battery life held up. While Tractive states the tracker battery generally lasts for 48 hours in default mode on a single charge, some users report having to charge it more frequently.

What causes the battery to drain quickly is frequent use of Live Track mode. As I was testing this feature, the battery life dropped by 4% over the course of about 5 minutes. Outside of live tracking, however, the battery life met expectations. The device recharged pretty quickly and I appreciated being able to remove it from the holder attached to the collar for charging, instead of having to remove the whole collar.

Battery life will always be a concern with a cat tracker but the Tractive CAT Mini has several power-saving features. The device automatically enters power-saving mode when it’s within range of your home WiFi network, and you can create additional Power Saving Zones using the app (if you’re traveling, for example). For areas without WiFi, you can use a plug-in Base Station to create a “fake” network for the tracker to identify and enter power-saving mode. Any time the tracker disconnects from the WiFi network or Base Station, it resumes GPS tracking as normal.

What Do Customers Think of the Tractive CAT Mini?

Across the board, Tractive customers report a high degree of satisfaction with the brand and its products. Tractive has a 4.6 (out of 5 stars) average rating on Trustpilot with over 40,000 total ratings. Fewer than 10% of customers on Trustpilot gave Tractive a rating under 4 stars.

The Tractive CAT Mini’s average rating is a little lower on pet retail sites like Chewy and Amazon. About 60% of Amazon customers rated the product 5 stars but nearly 30% gave it a 3-star rating or lower (out of 3,325 reviews). On Chewy, the Tractive CAT Mini only had about 100 customer reviews with a 3.6 average rating (out of 5 stars).

Positive Reviews

Customers generally find both the Tractive CAT Mini and the Tractive app easy to set up and intuitive to use. Numerous customers have shared stories of using the tracker to locate a missing cat, several commenting that the accuracy was more reliable than they expected. Several customers mentioned the

“I recently bought the tractive cat mini tracker, after using another tracker for the past 5 years. I love this tracker, mainly due to its accuracy of my cats location. I can immediately find him if needed.” – Deborah on Trustpilot.com, October 25, 2025

“This device has given me piece of mind knowing where my cat is in the neighborhood. It’s accurate enough that I can find my cat if he is lounging at a neighbor’s house. Battery last a good amount of time if you only use live mode to locate and not follow your cats movements all the time.” – Just A Guy on Amazon.com, October 14, 2025

Negative Reviews

The most common complaints customers have about the Tractive CAT Mini are related to the annual subscription requirement and inconsistent battery life. Several customers relayed concerns about being able to find their cat (or the tracker if it falls off) if the battery dies during extended use. Some also thought the tracker was too large or too heavy.

“Bit annoyed that the advertised monthly cost is actually based on an upfront full payment… You don’t find this out until you’ve bought the tracker and then have to fork out a chunk of money to get it to work. Still, it works well. Not sure the battery life is quite as good as advertised.” – David J on Trustpilot.com, October 25, 2025

“Tracker fell off while my cat was out and it won’t let me use the live tracking feature to find it since its in the power saving zone. It kind of defeats the purpose of this thing if I can’t use the live tracking feature whenever I want.” – Zach on Amazon.com, September 30, 2025

Overall, Is the Tractive CAT Mini a Good Choice?

Whether you’re trying to keep tabs on an outdoor cat or want the peace of mind to know you’ll be able to find your cat quickly if they sneak outside, the Tractive CAT Mini is a strong choice. Not only is it easy to set up and simple to use, but customers report accurate live tracking and useful features in the app. Any effective tracker is going to have some heft to it, but the Tractive CAT Mini is one of the smaller, lighter models on the market.

While this tracker offers reliable live tracking, the battery life drains quickly when this mode is activated. If you want to check in frequently with an outdoor cat who spends multiple days away from home, the Tractive CAT Mini might not be the ideal solution. You might be able to conserve battery life by expanding the size of your cat’s virtual Home zone, but the device will still need to be charged every few days.

To get the most out of your Tractive CAT Mini, take advantage of power-saving zones and charge the device on a regular basis. You may also want to check your cat’s location history once in a while and adjust any virtual fences as needed.

Very well presented. thank you. I am considering the Apple Air tag, despite it not being totally awesomely reviewed by cat lovers. Did you have a look at this tracker? thanks.

Hey Denise, no, I didn’t try the Apple AirTag myself, as I only have an Android device for testing. It sounds like it would be a good option for those whose cats stay indoors all the time and live in more urban areas and can connect to the network of other AirTag users, but it’s certainly not the most reliable option. Not sure if you’ve seen it, but KittyCatGo did a nice review.

Hi Denise, my cat has an airtag. You can see his location (it updates every 60 seconds), but it works only if the tracker is within a range of bluetooth (of any device). If he’s somewhere in the field, and I’m not nearby, I can only see his last location. Airtag does make a sound when you play it, like an iPhone, but again-you need to be in range. You can click “find nearby” function, and it will quite precisely lead you to the cat, but only when you’re in the bluetooth range, and it usually doesn’t work at night (keeps asking for providing more light). There’s no tracking history, so there’s no way to tell where your cat were and where’s he going. If the airtag is out of range, you can turn the “notify when found” function, which will send you a pop-up notification saying that the airtag has been seen. No subscription necessary, you just pay fir an airtag. Now the cons: when someone finds your airtag, they won’t be able to see your contact details, unless you’ve put the airtag in the “lost mode”, which (just in case) for my cat is constantly on. That’s basically it, no more pros, nor cons. To be honest, I’ve just bought a tracktive, cause I wanted to know where my cat was going, and I was tired and worried of the device being constantly out of range.

Forgot to add: on the plus side, the battery lasts about a year. There used to be a battery level icon in the “find my” app, but it disappeared. I’ll still keep using the airtag, but for the better results I’ll have the tracktive, cause the bluetooth range is not that great and cats usually roam
Further, which makes the airtag bit useless (unless you have a lot of neighbors surrounding you, then fine, I have mostly fields and forest)

1- Make damn sure your battery on your phone is charged full as you can get, going LIVE eats your battery power like Pac-Man 2- Wear sunglasses and a cap if you can when tracking outside as the sun makes reading your phone track damn near impossible

Tractive no longer offers a monthly plan. You will have to pay for at least a one-year subscription up front, which means that just to activate the tracker will cost you a minimum of $130 ON TOP of what you paid to purchase the device itself. That subscription charge will then auto renew every year.
