Meet Big Barsik the weightloss champion that went from a whooping 41lbs to 18lbs.

In the bustling streets of New York City, amidst the hustle and bustle, there’s a tail worth telling—a story of furry determination, triumph, and inspiration. Enter Barsik, the fluffy protagonist whose journey from hefty to healthy has become the talk of the town.

Barsik wasn’t just your average housecat—he was a heavyweight contender, weighing at a whopping 41 pounds. But in a city where everyone’s got a hustle, Barsik’s owner, Meredith Adams, knew it was time for her beloved furball to shed some pounds and strut his stuff with newfound confidence.

Barsik’s previous owners overfed him with an unlimited supply of dry food and great servings of canned food. With a game plan as carefully curated as a gourmet meal, Barsik embarked on his transformation journey. Meredith devoted her time to ensuring Barsik received the proper diet for weight loss. She carefully measured his portions, giving him exactly one and a half cans of cat food daily to keep him well-fed while helping him shed pounds.  Guided by a team of dedicated veterinarians and armed with a tailored diet and exercise routine, Barsik set out to turn his hefty frame into a lean, purrfect  figure.

With each step forward, Barsik shed the weight of yesterday’s struggles and embraced the promise of a healthier tomorrow. His progress wasn’t just measured in pounds lost, but in the bounce of his step and the sparkle in his eye.

CONGRATULATIONS. My nearly ten year old cat, DearBoy weighed 26 pounds. He could no longer jump. He walked slowly. He became very very ill and in July 2023, I had to have him euthanized. He could not have bowel movements and when I took him to the vet, he was in pain. X-rays showed an impacted colon, and the fecal matter was so solid that several enemas and hand intervention (yes, a graphic description) couldn’t remove the feces. When I took him to the vet and he was put on the scale, the vet’s first words were, ‘He’s obese.’ Euthanasia was the most humane alternative. He would not get better and. he was in pain. THIS WAS MY FAULT. The vet never was accusatory, but I knew. I fed him at will. He was a kitten when I adopted him–two older cats who weren’t happy to see him. He would eat their food. The pattern began. To anyone who loves their animal family member, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take heed. Control what they eat and how often. Our pets deserve a long and healthy life. We can provide the love and care they need without too much food.

Why don’t you show a good full picture of how Barsik looks now?? The picture shown doesn’t give us any idea of how transformed he is.

I agree with Georgette. Why not show us a photo of how he looks now? A side by side comparison would be encouraging to see. I have an 8 year old cat that was 24 pounds. We have been working on his weight and he is now 19.5. We still have work to do, but we’re getting there. I have 11 cats total, all rescues, so I have to feed Toby separately. It’s been challenging, but it’s worth it. My heart goes out to the person who posted about losing their cat 💔😢

I agree with you. I have eight cats. One is 18# which nay not be as overweight as yours, bu still about 8#too heavy. Feeding them is a daily frustrating challenge. This one overweight cat is constantly hungry, pestering me and causing me to feel guilty.
The article would have been more helpful if they told us what he was being fed. 1-1/2 cups a day is a huge amount of food!

Would have been nice to know how long this weight loss journey took. Also a picture of his new svelte self would have been inspiring to those owners going through the process.

Congratulations! I am not having any luck getting my 21/2 year old ..16 lb cat to lose weight. We live in a small apt but he doesn’t seem to eat THAT MUCH.. 3/4 C. of dry food and 3/4 of a can of wet food. Any suggestions ? I try to play with him but my 83 yr old stamina is deteriorating. I love him so much! We need help!

Even if it doesn’t look like a lot, that much food can still be too many calories for a big kitty, so ask the vet how much he should weigh and measure his food so he gets a little less each day. To help him move more without tiring you out, use easy games like a treat ball or puzzle feeder, or toss a few pieces of kibble down the hall for him to “hunt.”
