Have you ever had a cat run up to you in public? I sure haven’t!
Most people expect this behavior more from dogs, but approaching strangers is how Squid the cat became a local celebrity. His story can teach us a lot about the importance of taking care of our communities, and how one small act of kindness can make a huge difference in peoples’ lives.
Showing off Squid’s Purrsonality
Squid’s mom was originally thinking of adopting a dog. She went to the shelter to look around, figuring it’d take time to find one that suited her lifestyle.
Her cat was a senior at the time, and her mom had suggested that she adopt another cat instead. Since she was at the shelter anyway, she decided to take a peek!
Squid was fast asleep, but perked up immediately when he saw that he had visitors. He strutted right up to his mom, fearless.
He didn’t mind breaking the rules if it meant doing what he wanted, his mom says. “He immediately started just climbing all over me like a mountain.”
His silly personality was impossible not to fall in love with, and she ended up bringing him home the very next morning.
Becoming a Local Celebrity

These days, Squid is recognized by his community as an outgoing cat who will run up to strangers for attention. “People will come up to me and be like, ‘Oh my god, this is Squid!’” his mom says.
Most cats only behave this way with people they know very well, so those who are unfamiliar with cats aren’t used to seeing it. But in Squid’s eyes, everyone is a friend.
His mom describes him as a good beginner cat for people who haven’t been around them before, or who are afraid of cats. He’s especially gentle and patient with children, helping them build good experiences that will last a lifetime!
His mom loves how much joy he brings to herself and their community, and he’s helped her realize that she’s more of a cat person after all. She still loves all animals, but “cats are needy in a different way than dogs.” They don’t need less care–they’re just different!
Caring for a Blind Cat

Squid’s mom was told that being blind would limit his life. She was told not to move furniture around too much and to keep him at home, in a familiar environment.
It’s true that no cat should free-roam outdoors, and being blind can make that even more dangerous. However, Squid’s mom has found safe ways to give him the adventure he craves.
She started by taking him outside on her shoulder. He liked it so much that they spent longer and longer outside, until four months later when she bought his first harness.
“He just told me how he wanted to live his life and here we are!” his mom says. Squid’s walks provide him with much-needed mental enrichment, and also the socialization he clearly craves.
Interestingly, she says that he rarely runs into anything. When he does, he’s usually sprinting at full speed around a corner and doesn’t have time to stop himself.
He still has an excellent sense of hearing and smell to help guide him through the world. He also bobs his head up and down like a radar, according to his mom. She likes to imagine he’s like a bat using sonar to take in his surroundings.
As for Squid, he doesn’t know any different than the life he has now. He’s remained just as friendly, fearless, and sassy as the day his mom adopted him from the shelter.
In that time, though, he’s changed many people’s lives for the better, including his mom’s! He brought her into her local community, gave her a talking point to help make more friends of her own, and has shown her the importance of people (and animals) coming together.
She urges people to adopt a shelter cat if they can, and also to get involved in mutual aid and caring for their own communities. If Squid can teach us anything, it’s that one little life can make a huge difference!
