Bless us, Pastor Coco, for we have sinned.
A remarkable cat named Coco has been perching outside the entrance to a church in Mexico and tapping worshippers with his paw on their bowed heads just before they enter the sanctuary. The parishioners walk up, tip their heads forward, and get the pat of a blessing on their heads! Coco really seems to know what he is doing and operates his paw with deliberation and impeccable timing. Indeed, some people have commented that Coco thinks he is the pope.
A purring pope? Sure, we’ll take it! After all, anything is possible with a cat – and cats and kittens benefit from spiritual blessings, too.
The video, was posted on Instagram May 24 on the Catholic page Trad West, was posted on May 24 and delighted cat lovers around the world. The reel, which plays the film score from The Godfather as a comical touch, has earned 17.6K likes and many funny and sweet comments.

“The cat knows who the creator is,” another user added.
“Talk about being Cat-holic,” a clever user wrote.
One user had this to say: “Love animals … why? Their innocence and joy they have when with us gives us joy.”
The video of Coco has been re-posted on many websites and brought so many smiles to people. The family of the late Frank Caprio, the judge of Caught in Providence fame, expresses eloquently in a Facebook post about what Coco represents.

Now, it is worth noting that while this video and comments and short stories have circulated widely, the Coco story has a big element of mystery. I can’t find a single source that gives the major missing details – namely, what is the name of this church, and where in Mexico is it? Who owns Coco? Somebody must, as the cat has a name, wears a collar, and looks healthy. I am just guessing that Coco is male, because of some Instagram comments, but none of these people are connected to the cat, who may very well be a – well, female feline purr-eist. It appears nobody has interviewed someone with the unnamed church.
We do not know why the details and sources are missing from this story, but we still find it credible and sweet enough to share. The video appears to be real footage, and not ultra-polished AI-generated visuals. We will just have to accept that somewhere in Mexico, a sweet and playful and entertaining cat named Coco is blessing people at a church like a clergy member and bringing joy to their worship experience in that unique cat way.
Coco is not the only famous church cat the world has seen. Cats take up residence at many places other than homes – including businesses, museums, churches, and schools – and bring love, laughter, and cuteness to the people who go there. As for churches, back in 2008, author and photographer Richard Surman had a book published called Church Cats. It looks like a great read!
One famous church cat, with the extraordinary name of Doorkins Magnificat, lived at Southwark Cathedral in London, England for more than a decade. Doorkins started visiting Southwark Cathedral as a stray in 2008, and she came to the doors every morning seeking food. The brown tabby knew she had found a home – and indeed, she lived at Southwark for many years. Beloved among parishioners and the public, Doorkins even met Queen Elizabeth II!
Sadly, Doorkins Magnificat died of a stroke in a caretaker’s arms in 2020. Then, a new resident church cat named Hodge moved in and continued Doorkins’ legacy of feline-style faith! Hodge, a black and white tuxedo cat, came to the church in 2020 with a growth on his face that badly needed medical attention. Now, Hodge is a beloved Southwark Cathedral celebrity in his own right.
More than 80 years ago, a brave and sweet cat named Faith made history during World War II in London. She showed up at a church rectory as a stray, and Father Henry Ross took care of her at the church. In 1940, Faith gave birth to a black and white kitten named Panda, and she seemed to sense her baby was in danger. Faith hid with Panda inside a pile of sheet music in the basement, and later that day – September 9, 1940 – the German Luftwaffe dropped bombs in an intense air raid on London called The Blitz.
The church was destroyed, but Father Ross searched through the wreckage frantically for his beloved felines. He found Faith nursing Panda under the sheet music, surrounded by burning rubble. In 1945, Faith was given an honorary medal for the cat’s bravery!
We hope that many more churches will show love for God’s creatures and take in friendly stray cats who may show up in need of a home. Churches just may get a beloved resident like Coco, Doorkins Magnificat, Hodge, or Faith. The presence of a cat has such a soothing effect on many people, so a church cat seems like a purrfect prayer partner!
