According to Uno’s mom, all he wants in life is to be a fat cat. However, she’s constantly ruining his dream by giving him healthy portions and thwarting his attempts to break into the cat food bag.
Here’s the story of how Uno learned to “feed himself,” and how he hid his plan from his mom!
An Accidental Adoption

The cats’ mom says that she adopted them each at very different times in her life. She met Uno while walking to her car with a friend.
He walked straight up to them and meowed. His mom meowed back, as any good cat parent would, and Uno came even closer.
He seemed too friendly to be out on his own, so she decided to bring him home. At the time, she thought it’d be easy to find his home and return him to his owners.
She took him to the vet, but he wasn’t chipped. She posted on Facebook, called local shelters, and contacted animal control. Nobody seemed to be missing a cat.
She thought she was taking in Uno to find his home, she says, but it turned out she was his home!
Mysterious Weight Gain

The first time Uno broke into the food bag, his mom worried about his weight gain. She was feeding him the same amount each day, so why did he seem heavier than usual? Was she doing something wrong?
Soon, she found a tear in the plastic food bag, and learned that Uno was feeding himself between meals. The smart cat was so subtle about it that his mom never even noticed!
He did this on multiple occasions, she said. His mom may have tried to stop him, but he refused to give up on his “dream” of eating as much food as possible.
Meeting Dos

As Uno entered his senior years, his mom decided that he needed a brother. She spread the word that she was looking for another cat, hoping she could find someone that Uno could relate to.
Dos the kitten had been dumped in a park before he was even old enough to be neutered. He followed her friend’s cat home, demanding to be let in!
The friend couldn’t keep him, but Uno’s mom knew immediately that he was the one. Just like Uno, he’d been abandoned. She thought their shared background would help them understand one another, and she was right! The boys became the best of friends.
Uno started grooming him the first time they met, and it was love at first sight for Dos, too. They slept in the same cat tree, snuggled constantly, and acted like they’d always been part of each others’ lives.
Uno even taught Dos how to break into the food bag, though he isn’t nearly as subtle as Uno.
How to Store Cat Food
Does your cat also chew holes into the food bag? Here are some cat food storage tips:
- Keep the food in the bag. Cat food bags are made to keep the food fresh, so you don’t want to pour it out into a secondary container. While it might look nicer, plastic containers can also develop tiny, invisible tears over time. When oils from your cat’s food get into these tiny crevices, the container may begin to smell or even make your new, fresh food go rancid.
- Instead of pouring, place the entire bag into a sealed container. This is especially helpful for bags that don’t seal on their own, as it keeps out pests and helps the food stay fresher. Of course, it also stops your cat from tearing into the food bag.
- Cat-proof your food container. Make sure your container has a solid latch that can’t be opened by your cat. As an added precaution, you can also place it somewhere your cat can’t access, such as a child-locked cabinet or cupboard.
- Remember to wash your food bin and scoop regularly. It’s so easy to forget this step, but try to wash both each time you replace the food bag.
By storing your cats food like a pro, you’ll be able to keep it fresher for longer—and prevent the kind of thievery that Uno resorted to!
