When Blu the dog started having seizures, it was hard on the whole family. Volunteering at a local shelter helped his parents cope with the stress of his condition.
Previously dog people, Blu’s parents decided to foster one kitten–and Blu’s bond with Dory inspired them to help even more cats in need. Now, they’ve rescued several cats in Blu’s honor.
It Started With One Special Kitten
Blu was in his first year of experiencing seizures when his parents decided to foster Dory, a silly four-week-old kitten who helped them laugh and forget their stress, even if only for a little while.
Little did they know that Dory would also help Blu learn to play again, inspiring him to live life to the fullest despite his poor health. Sometimes a kitten can really help to bring an older animal out of their shell!
After a month of watching the two bond, Blu’s parents went back and forth about whether to keep Dory or find her a forever home. In the end, they couldn’t bear to separate the two.
Fostering More Cats
Smoothie, Donut, and Milk were three kittens on the shelter’s euthanasia list due to a lack of space and resources to care for all the cats. Blu and Dory’s parents wanted to help, so they brought home the three kittens, committed to fostering them until they found homes.
Donut and Milk were soon pre-adopted, but no one showed interest in Smoothie–except Dory! The two cats formed a close bond, just as Dory and Blu had, and their parents decided to keep her, too.
Eventually, Donut was returned by her adopter. Not wanting to put her through more heartbreak, the couple decided to adopt a third cat!
These two don’t keep every cat they foster, however. They’ve also rescued two cats from Romania, one from Austria, and two more from Germany. These were all adult cats who were shy or sick, and needed some extra care to get ready for adoption.

It’s incredible that this all started because of Blu and Dory. “Blu was a matchmaker for me and my cats,” their mom says, and Dory managed to turn the entire family into cat people.
They’re sad Blu became so sick, but are also inspired by the joy he found in Dory and the other cats, and the joy he was able to bring to his human family along the way.
They hope that Blu and Dory’s story will inspire even more people to get involved in rescue, whether it’s by volunteering at your local shelter, fostering a pet, or adopting. Most local shelters are desperate for help, and by reaching out you might just save a life.
