TofuKitty Cat Litter Video Review

Note: Since this article was written, TofuKitty has been discontinued. We’re sorry to see this product leave the market and are on the lookout for another soy-based cat litter that offers similar performance.

How We Tested:

  • We purchased two 10-pound bags of TofuKitty Cat Litter
  • We spent a few weeks testing the cat litters on several cats
  • We did not receive this product in exchange for a favorable review; it was purchased independently

Brand Overview

TofuKitty Club was founded by environmental ecologist Ms. Molly Anderson in Delaware, and first hit the US market in 2018. They offer 100% plant-based, eco-friendly cat litter, that is delivered right to your doorstep.

TofuKitty cat litter was created with the vision to help reduce pet product waste and create a kitty litter that is safe for cats, humans, and is gentle on the planet. Their litter is a safe alternative to clay and crystal litters, is free of harmful chemicals, clumping agents, and other toxins that have been linked to cancer and diseases. It is made of recycled plant parts which naturally help reduce greenhouse gasses and is compostable, flushable, and biodegradable.

TofuKitty cat Litter is 100% vegan-friendly, soft on paws, locks in moisture, and doesn’t stick to your cat’s paws.

What Is TofuKitty Cat Litter Made From?

TofuKitty cat litter is made of 100% natural bean dregs and contains no chemical additives. This means the litter is made entirely of reclaimed food-grade, plant-based ingredients.

The soft pellet-style litter creates a natural gummy clump and has strong absorbent abilities, is dust-free, and reduces tracking.

It also possesses excellent odor control and absorbent qualities and is 3 times more absorbent than grain-based litters. Because it is biodegradable and compostable it is not a burden on the environment.

Ordering Process

TofuKitty cat litter is only available through subscription service through their website. This means you will need to join the Tofukitty Cat Litter Club and enter how many cats you own. Each bag of litter is supposed to last one month per cat entered in your profile.

Once your order is placed, the litter is shipped out the next day and you should receive it within 7 days. They also offer free shipping and you are able to cancel your subscription at any time.

TofuKitty Cat Litter Reviewed

Tofukitty Cat Litter bags arrive in a cardboard box that is 100% biodegradable, and when recycled properly, it reduces waste in the landfills. The litter is also packaged in a light, more durable plastic that is not particularly energy-intensive to manufacture.

When opening up the bag of Tofukitty litter, I noticed the green pellets are lightweight, with a vegetal aroma, similar to that of green tea. The green color does not transfer to floors or paws.

TofuKitty Pellets

Tofukitty suggests pouring 2 to 3 inches of litter in your cat’s box. While pouring it in I noticed significantly less dust when compared to other litter brands, but there was still some dust in the air.

Putting Tofukitty Cat Litter to the Test

Once the litter was in the box, it was time to see how my cats react to it. Both my cats took to the litter immediately and dug around with no issues. The pellets appear comfortable on the paws, and my cats had no problem digging around in it.

The litter does form soft, gummy clumps that are easy to scoop. While the litter passed through my regular scoop easily, I found that using a litter scoop with larger openings helped it to pass more smoothly and made cleaning easier.

Tofu Kitty litter scooping

Tofu Kitty litter is easy to scoop. The clumps are relatively soft and have a bouncy, gummy consistency that seldom sticks to the side of the box. Mallory Crusta / Cats.com

The nice thing about this litter is that the clumps do not stick to the box. This makes it simple to scoop waste without scraping.

Another win for this litter is its ability to control odor. After two weeks there was little smell coming from the litter box and it seemed to do just as good of a job as the top clay litters with odor.

There was some tracking and scatter around the litter box area as well as other areas of the house, including up the stairs.

Pros

  • Easy to clean and scoop
  • Does a good job of controlling odors
  • Minimal dust protection
  • Made from recycled materials
  • Seems to be comfortable on cats paws
  • Offers clumping abilities

Cons

  • Clumps seem to be on the soft side
  • Expensive litter
  • There is some tracking
  • Pellets may not work well with all scoops
  • Only available through a subscription service

What Do Customers Think of Tofukitty Cat Litter?

The TofuKitty Club customer testimonials are mostly positive, but keep in mind that all of these reviews or testimonials are directly from the TofuKitty Club website.

In my experience purchasing from TofuKitty, I noticed some significant issues. Shortly after I purchased the litter for the review, the TofuKitty Club website became unusable. It was impossible to click links on the home page and impossible to place an order.

I contacted TofuKitty support on Facebook. No response. At the time of this writing, it’s been five weeks since I wrote to TofuKitty, and I’ve still not heard anything.

While the TofuKitty website is currently working as of late March 2021, this experience raises significant concerns about the company’s reliability.

Positive Reviews

“Love this litter wayyy more than what I was previously using. Barely any smell, very tidy and barely tracked by my cats. I love the way it clumps and most of all I’m glad it doesn’t contain any harmful ingredients!” – Madeleine

“My kitten switched over to this with no difficulty, it’s so much easier than regular litter and smells less!” – Sarah K

“This is hands down the best litter I have ever used. It is a bit more expensive, but not having to deal with tracking or with the “gross litterbox” that happens with clay.” – Elizabeth

I love it! It rarely smells, is clean, low tracking, and I love the fact that I can flush it right down the toilet. Best litter I’ve found so far. – Elena

Negative Reviews

“I’ve been using Tofukitty for a bit over a month now. My kitties transitioned to it quickly and easily. The litter clumps well, and has good odor control in comparison to other litters I’ve used. My kitties still track litter as they exit the litter box, and I haven’t been able to find a mat that works well to keep the litter in the litter box room only. I still haven’t tried flushing the clumps, as I live in an older home, and am concerned about the plumbing. All in all, I’m glad I switched and love Tofukitty litter.” -Jeanne Scott

“Very happy overall! I would warn others to wait for the litter to completely dissolve before flushing or you risk a toilet overflowing. I learned this the hard way. Otherwise, I am really happy with the odor control and the significant reduction of tracking litter” -Kelly

“TofuKitty is my first time trying tofu cat litter and I like it a lot. It really beats the other types of cat litter out there. I think the only thing missing if it’s possible is to make it able to fight bacteria for a cleaner litter…” -Gilberto B

How Much Does Tofukitty Cat Litter Cost?

TofuKitty Cat Litter costs $25 per month, per cat, with free shipping. This breaks down to about $2.50 per pound. This puts it on the expensive side compared to other tofu cat litter products.

How Much Does Tofukitty Cat Litter Cost?

TofuKitty offers great performance overall. It’s low-dust, easy to clean, controls, odors well, and has a cat-friendly consistency. On top of strong performance, it’s an environmentally-friendly option that’s sustainably-manufactured and biodegradable.

While the litter performs extremely well, the customer experience leaves a lot to be desired. Unpredictable availability and hard-to-reach customer support make it an unreliable option compared to other litter products.

And even if you can ignore those customer support issues, the fact that it’s a subscription service may be a deterrent. Those who want to purchase just one bag at a time may not like the commitment to monthly deliveries.

Finally, Tofu Kitty’s price is a significant downside. At $25 per month for one cat, the cost of this product adds up fast and could be prohibitive for those on a budget, especially if you have a multi-cat home.

Where Is TofuKitty Cat Litter Sold?

TofuKitty cat litter is only available through their website.
