Whoever would have thought that working on litter boxes would be fun? Well, nobody ever will enjoy dealing with cat waste, but an Australian company called MichuPet indeed makes the task less unpleasant and, in fact, a little bit fun and even stylish.

Michu offers mostly tofu-based litters that come in several fun scents and matching bright colors, for a playful feel and a pleasant scent in many formulas. Michu’s innovative, quirky litters come in scents and colors that are largely summery—with formulas such as Ocean Fresh, Peach, and Watermelon—so July and August were the purrfect months to test these Michu litters at my house with my crew of a half-dozen cats.
Why Trust Cats.com
Our team has tested just about every litter on the market, so we understand what makes a good litter and what traits cat owners consider undesirable.
I purchased six Michu brand cat litters and spent two months testing the litters with my six cats. I paid close attention to the traits of the litter, such as clumping ability and smell. We did not receive these products in exchange for a favorable review; we purchased the litter with our own money.
We chose to skip four formulas, including the Michu Wonder Cat Litter Plant Based Litter, because it is designed for automatic litter boxes and I do not own one of those. We skipped Jasmine Nature Mixed Cat Litter, also marketed for automatic litter boxes, for the same reason. I also skipped Plant-Based Tofu Cat Litter for Kittens, since I didn’t have a kitten at home that could test it.
This review also doesn’t include the brand-new Mixed Tofu Cat Litter Lite, which I first saw on the website the day I finished writing this article.
We included in the review a formula that appears to have possibly been discontinued, or at least is on hold: Coffee Scented Tofu Clumping Cat Litter. I bought this along with the convenient Rainbow Combo six-pack, which includes one of each of the tofu litters: Original, Green Tea, Watermelon, Peach, and Ocean Fresh, plus a bonus bag of Super-Mixed Cat Litter, which is a plant-based/clay hybrid.
The coffee litter was purchased separately from Chewy, but after I bought it, I noticed that it was not on the Michu website. I wrote to customer service to inquire about it, and the reply email did not say it was discontinued. The agent wrote this: “At the moment, the Coffee Cat Litter is unavailable, and we don’t have a confirmed restock date yet. We apologize for any disappointment this may cause.”
Sincethe status is vague—and as of September 1, the coffee litter is still available on Chewy – we included the litter in the review.
Brand Overview
An Australian man in his 30s named Qinghua Siluo, an avid cat lover based in Melbourne, launched the Michu brand in April 2022 as a premium pet brand specializing in tofu-based cat litter. The company, which began in a garage, was a huge hit and generated more than $10 million in sales worldwide during the first three years. Michu expanded into the United States market through Chewy and Amazon in 2025, so this brand is still fairly new in America.
Siluo, who has eight of his own cats, was inspired by a desire to make the more unpleasant parts of cat ownership—namely, dealing with the litter box—more fun and cool. He found standard cat litter and related products, like standard litter boxes and accessories, to be “boring and old,” Siluo told the Australian outlet news.com.au.
“It won’t excite me when I’m cleaning the cat’s business,” Siluo told the news outlet.
He also wanted to create a litter out of environmentally friendly materials, since clay comes from strip mining and doesn’t biodegrade.
You can order Michu litter directly from the website and at retailers including Chewy, Petco, Walmart. I bought my bags directly from Michu and at Chewy.
The Michu brand also includes items like litter boxes in unconventional styles, cat trees, toys, a cat grass kit, and more.
What Kind of Litter Does Michu Offer?
Michu offers five types of tofu-based litter that are identical except for scents and matching cute colors. The company also makes a line of mixed litters, with both clay and plant-based materials, along with specialty litters for automatic litter boxes and kittens, and pellet litter additives that monitor the pH of cat urine and alert cat parents to potential health problems.
Here are the seven Michu litters we used and reviewed.
- Tofu Cat Litter – Original (available in 5.5-pound bags and 11-pound boxes)
- Tofu Cat Litter – Peach (available in 5.5-pound bags and 11-pound boxes)
- Tofu Cat Litter – Green Tea (available only in 5.5-pound bags)
- Tofu Cat Litter – Watermelon (available only in bags of 5.5 pounds)
- Tofu Cat Litter – Ocean Fresh (available only in bags of 5.5 pounds)
- Super-Mixed Cat Litter (available only in bags of 5.5 pounds)
- Coffee Scented Tofu Clumping Cat Litter (available only in bags of 5.5 pounds)
The first five litters are identical as far as basic ingredients and structure; they only differ in scent and color. Otherwise, the litters have the same thin, sticklike pieces and mostly the same quality and performance. As for the mixed and coffee formulas, they look very similar with grayish stick pieces mixed with colored beads that work as deodorizers.
Most of Michu’s litters come in small bags that will only fill up a box with an inch or so. I recommend ordering bags in six-packs, which either come in a single formula or a variety pack so you can try six of them and see which you like best.

What Did the Test Cats Think?

Kellie Gormly / Cats.com
I have a Brady Bunch of six cats at my house and several litter boxes, usually with two filled with clumping clay, two filled with pine litters, and two others that serve as wild cards where I rotate different litters. Because I had seven Michu litters to review, I went through a period with one clay-filled litter box and three others filled with a different Michu litter. The cats had free choice.
I wish I could wean them off clay litter because of its environmental impact, weight, mess, and, in my opinion, weaker odor control. Unfortunately, though, clumping clay litter apparently remains the top choice for all of my cats. The boxes with clay always have more waste than the others, especially “number two.”
That said, the Michu litters weren’t any cat’s favorite, although the coffee formula was a fairly close second. But at least one of my cats used each of the Michu litter-filled boxes regularly, much more commonly for pee than for poop.
So, while clay remains king with my cats, Michu seems to be a solid second choice. For them, that means approval of the brand.
What Do Customers Think of Michu?

The Watermelon formula has 84% four-star and five-star reviews, and 6% one-star reviews. The Peach formula has 80% four-star and five-star reviews, and 9% one-star reviews. Ocean Fresh has 68% four-star and five-star reviews, and 8% one-star reviews. Finally, the Super-Mixed formula got 76% four-star and five-star reviews, and 11% one-star reviews.
Positive Reviews
“I’ve been using this litter for about two weeks and I absolutely love it. When I go to scoop it out it clumps great and doesn’t smell. It just has a light wood-ish odor which is not unpleasant at all. It tracks a tiny bit but that could just be because my cat is messy. But it’s very easy to vacuum or sweep up. Highly recommend this litter!” – Paige, reviewing Tofu Cat Litter on Chewy (Aug 20, 2026)
“I’ve tried a lot of litters and this is the best one I’ve ever used. I’m severely allergic to dust and many litters are dusty and trigger my asthma. But MichuPet is dust free, smells great, and is super easy to clean. There’s also very little tracking!” – Cameron, reviewing Tofu Cat Litter – Peach on Chewy (Jan 30, 2026)
Negative Reviews
“It had a weird but manageable smell in the beginning. But after a few days, it smelled awful. It doesn’t work with how many times my cat uses the restroom. It would absorb smells and then project them around the room.” – Milagros, reviewing Tofu Cat Litter on Chewy (Aug 28, 2026)
“The ocean freshness… was a weird smell and I could tell the cats disliked it. I generally had to mix this with other litter for them to use it.” – Kate, reviewing Tofu Cat Litter – Ocean Fresh on Chewy (Feb 16, 2026)
Overall, Is Michu a Good Choice?
Yes, I think most cat parents and cats will find at least one litter to love from the Michu line, although the price will deter many from trying it. These are excellent litters made from good ingredients, and they outperform traditional clay litters in many ways. Cats who are used to clay will need time to warm up to this new style of litter.
