Scooping the litter box is a daily chore that almost no one enjoys. That’s what makes automatic litter boxes so tempting, but their high price tags can also deter a lot of cat parents.

If you’re going to spend hundreds of dollars on a product, you want it to be worthwhile and used by your cat! Although no one can promise the latter, I’ve tested the Beokeo S20 Pro automatic litter box in my own home to see if it lives up to its promises. Keep reading for my honest review!

Why Trust Cats.com

Our team purchases and tests products in our own homes to offer the most in-depth, honest reviews possible. While testing this automatic litter box, I took notes on how the litter box scooped, whether the sensors worked as intended, and how easy it was to deep clean.

Since my cats don’t typically use automatic litter boxes, my testing process also included using a cup of water to form clumps in the litter. These clumps varied in size, as I wanted to see what the device was able to scoop. I also poured some water close to the liner to test for leakage.

Beokeo S20 Pro Automatic Litter Box and Brand Overview

Beokeo S20 Pro Automatic Litter Box and Brand Overview

Katelynn Sobus / Cats.com

Beokeo is a pet technology brand that sells smart litter boxes and other pet care products. While it primarily offers self-cleaning litter boxes, it also has a small range of dog and cat grooming items. Their designs focus on safety, quality, and pet health.

Their standard automatic litter box aims to provide a quiet cleaning experience. It features a large waste bin, multiple safety sensors, and a customizable app for tracking litter box usage.

Beokeo S20 Pro Automatic Litter Box Features

The Beokeo S20 Pro automatic litter box boasts an extra-large drum, thorough litter sifting, and easy, hands-free cleaning. Unfortunately, it failed to meet all of these criteria during my testing.

While the drum is a decent size and has a large entryway, I can’t see my large cats fitting inside comfortably. Many automatic litter boxes have limited interior space for large cats, and I also think this is true of this Beokeo model.

We’ll talk more about my hands-on experience below, but I wasn’t impressed by either its scooping abilities or its deep-cleaning process.

The litter box does excel at having an easy-to-use smartphone app, anti-pinch sensors for cat safety, and quiet operation at an advertised 35 decibels or less.

It also contains a large, pull-out waste bin that is advertised to hold up to 15 days of waste for one cat, but since it’s not tightly sealed, you may want to empty it more often for odor control purposes. Initial purchase includes two rolls of waste bags, which I found to be sturdy and durable.

As with any automatic litter box, follow the manufacturer’s weight and age requirements, and don’t rely on the safety sensors as a substitute for supervision when introducing your cat to the machine.

What We Like:

  • Large entrance
  • Anti-pinch sensors for cat safety
  • Quiet operation – at or under 35 decibels
  • Large waste bin and durable waste bags

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Difficult assembly and deep-cleaning process
  • Left several tiny, broken clumps of litter behind, even after multiple cleaning cycles
  • Litter liner may leak if a cat sprays or pees near the edge
  • Drum may be too small for some large cats

What Did Our Test Cats Think?

Beokeo S20 Pro automatic litter box

The first impression you get with any automatic litter box is during assembly. Unfortunately, the Beokeo S20 Pro automatic litter box was pretty frustrating in this regard.

The drum was somewhat difficult to piece together. I found it easier to place the liner in last, although this went against the instructions provided. There were also a lot of stickers inside the drum and on the cleaning plates that were difficult to remove.

I was hoping that the scooping and deep-cleaning processes would be better, but several litter clumps broke into smaller fragments and were left behind. After several cycles, I tried scooping with a normal litter scoop and was able to remove them.

Given the fragmented clumps and what appeared to be a poor seal on the waste bin, I don’t think this litter box would be good at odor control. Pouring liquid around the edges of the liner did result in some leakage as well. The litter box comes with leak-proof tape to prevent this, which reads to me as a quick fix from Beokeo that may push the expense of buying additional tape onto consumers rather than addressing the issue with the product.

The deep cleaning process was just as frustrating as initial assembly. Instead of emptying the litter out automatically, you have to swap out the sifter for a difficult-to-place “sand clean plate.” There’s also not an easy way to remove the litter liner without disassembling the entire drum.

I had to reset the machine after installing the sand clean plate, likely because some of my weight rested on the litter box while struggling to get it in place. When it finally did empty, quite a bit of litter was left at the bottom of the tray (which is not uncommon for this type of litter box in my experience).

On the bright side, the sensors worked well and held up to my testing, even when I reached toward the waste chute while it was cycling. The drum paused and reversed, which is exactly what you’d want to happen if a curious cat was trying to explore the waste bin!

Still, my overall experience with this one was poor, and I’ve tested much better products in this price range. I can’t say that I recommend it.

What Do Customers Think of the Beokeo S20 Pro Automatic Litter Box?

The Beokeo S20 Pro automatic litter box isn’t currently available on Chewy or Amazon, so there aren’t many customer reviews available.

Positive Reviews

Some positive reviews on Beokeo’s own site praise the litter box for reliable notifications, odor control, and ease of use. Many say the automatic scooping is hassle-free and saves them a lot of time.

Unfortunately, my experience was the opposite, as I did find it to be a hassle to use and clean.

Negative Reviews

While I found limited negative feedback about the Beokeo S20 Pro automatic litter box, some otherwise positive reviews mentioned problems with litter being kicked out of the box, easily resolved connectivity issues, and a somewhat difficult assembly process.

I didn’t have connectivity issues myself, but I did struggle with assembly as well as disassembly for deep-cleaning.

Overall, Is the Beokeo S20 Pro Automatic Litter Box a Good Choice?

Unfortunately, this isn’t a product I can recommend to cat parents. After experiencing several issues with assembly, scooping, and deep cleaning, I found it to be more of a hassle than a normal litter box.

While there were some positives, like the large entrance and accurate safety sensors, I’ve tested other automatic litter boxes within this price range that are more user-friendly and scoop litter clumps more thoroughly.
