Why Trust Cats.com

At Cats.com, we purchase and test products ourselves so we can offer honest, experience‑based reviews that help cat parents make informed decisions. Over the past two years, we’ve tested a wide range of cat trackers, evaluating each one for accuracy, battery life, comfort, app usability, and real‑world reliability.

While this review focuses specifically on the BONSO Smart Activity Pet Tracker Collar, it also draws on our broader experience with other trackers we’ve tested. This includes evaluating app ecosystems, subscription requirements, tracking range, and how each device performs in everyday situations like backyard roaming, hiding indoors, and short‑distance escapes.

If you’re curious how BONSO compares to competing trackers, our past testing provides helpful context for understanding where this lightweight, subscription‑free collar shines and where it may fall short compared to more advanced GPS systems.

BONSO Brand Overview

BONSO Brand Overview

Amy Brown-Towry / Cats.com

BONSO is a pet‑tech brand focused on creating lightweight, subscription‑free tracking devices for cats and dogs. Their goal is to make everyday pet tracking simple and accessible, offering collars that combine location updates, separation alerts, and short-range audio alerts in a compact, comfortable design. Unlike cellular GPS trackers that rely on mobile networks and monthly fees, BONSO uses Bluetooth-based tracking to provide app-connected location information without ongoing costs.

The brand emphasizes ease of use, featherlight hardware, and intuitive app integration for pet parents who want basic location monitoring without bulky devices or complicated setup. BONSO’s approach centers on everyday practicality—helping owners locate pets that hide indoors, slip into nearby yards, or wander short distances—while keeping the collar comfortable enough for cats who dislike heavy or rigid trackers.

BONSO Smart Activity Pet Tracker Features

The BONSO Smart Activity Pet Tracker Collar comes with two main components: the featherlight tracking module and the adjustable collar with a built-in snap mount. The tracker attaches securely to the collar using the integrated housing, creating a comfortable setup suitable for everyday wear. Before first use, the device should be fully charged, then the white disc tracker removed from the collar so you can hold the button to enter pairing mode and connect it to the BONSO app, which is available for both iOS (including Find My compatibility) and Android.

Once in use, the BONSO collar provides Bluetooth-based location updates and separation alerts through the app. Unlike cellular GPS trackers, BONSO uses a Bluetooth-based approach, making it useful for locating cats that hide indoors, slip into nearby yards, or wander close to home. Its location can also be updated farther away when the collar comes within range of compatible smartphones. When your cat is within range, the app can help you find their approximate location. It may also show their last reported location when a compatible smartphone detects the collar.

The collar includes two locating tools:

  • An app‑controlled audio alert, which triggers a loud beeping sound to help you find your cat if they’re hiding under furniture, in bushes, or inside the home.
  • Location updates, which show where your cat was last detected, helping you locate them when they wander out of sight.

BONSO also includes separation alerts, notifying you when your phone loses its Bluetooth connection with the collar for a prolonged period. Unlike cellular GPS geofencing, these alerts don’t notify you immediately when your cat leaves a designated area. They may still be helpful for indoor cats who occasionally slip outside or for outdoor cats who stay close to home.

Battery life is one of BONSO’s standout features. The tracker is advertised to last up to 365 days on a single battery, depending on usage. The app provides low-battery alerts so you’re notified when the battery is running low. The tracker is IP67 waterproof, making it good for rain, mist, and everyday outdoor conditions. A backup battery is also included with the tracker.

Because BONSO does not rely on cellular networks, no subscription is required. The available location-finding features do not require a paid subscription.

What Did Our Test Cats Think?

BONSO Smart Activity Pet Tracker

Amy Brown-Towry / Cats.com

To understand how the BONSO Smart Activity Pet Tracker performs in everyday use, we tested it with one of our own cats, a curious indoor‑outdoor explorer who occasionally slips outside and hides in hard‑to‑reach places. He doesn’t normally wear a collar, so he was initially unsure about the setup, but the featherlight design helped him adjust quickly. Within a short period, he tolerated the tracker and moved around normally. However, the tracker portion did seem a little bulky on his thin, lanky frame.

Because BONSO is designed for Bluetooth-based tracking, we focused on scenarios where cats tend to disappear close to home: hiding under beds, slipping behind furniture, exploring the backyard, or ducking into bushes. In these situations, the tracker performed well. The app showed his general location reliably, and the audio alert was especially helpful and loud enough to pinpoint him when he tucked himself under a bush or under parked cars.

The reliability of location updates varied depending on distance and obstacles. When he was indoors or just outside the house, the app provided a clear sense of where he was. As he moved farther away or behind thicker barriers, the precision decreased, but the tracker still gave enough information to guide us to the right area. The location updates also showed where he was last detected, although they didn’t provide a detailed history of his daily movements.

Because BONSO isn’t a cellular GPS system, it doesn’t provide continuous location tracking or detailed navigation. You still need to use your own judgment to reach the area it indicates. For cats who roam widely or travel long distances, a cellular GPS tracker would be more appropriate. But for indoor cats, yard explorers, or cats who occasionally slip outside, BONSO serves as a practical locating tool that may help you find them nearby.

Overall, the BONSO tracker works best as a Bluetooth-based locating device for cats who stay close to home. It’s not a replacement for supervising your cat outdoors, but it’s a helpful backup if your cat hides, wanders nearby, or doesn’t come home right away. As always, only breakaway collars should be used on cats for safety, so make sure the BONSO collar has a functioning breakaway buckle.

What Do Customers Think of the BONSO Smart Activity Pet Tracker Collar?

Customer feedback for the BONSO Smart Activity Pet Tracker Collar is mixed. Positive reviewers praise its durable design, easy setup, comfortable fit, and compatibility with Apple’s Find My network. Some cat owners appreciate the peace of mind it provides when monitoring their pets. However, negative reviews raise concerns about misleading real-time tracking claims, noting that location updates depend on nearby compatible devices rather than continuous GPS tracking. One customer also reported receiving a defective product.

Positive Reviews

This tracking collar was very easy to connect to my apple find my. The collar looks sharp and is heavy-duty. I’ve lost AirTags from other collars that were in silicone holders, but this one is completely attached to the collar and isn’t coming off. Very happy with this purchase – by Steve

Looks bulky but he wears it every day and he still goes out wounding hasn’t slowed him down and knowing we can look in on him at anytime is comforting thank’s. – by Culligan man! on October 22, 2026

Negative Reviews

This tracker is just an off-brand airtag, the real time tracking does not work. It works just like an airtag, there has to be a phone nearby for the location to update. The “real time tracking” is totally misleading. – by Maddy on on October 18, 2026

Was defective. Need QR return code – by Ann King on October 19, 2026

Would We Recommend It?

Yes, for cat parents who want a budget-friendly, lightweight, subscription-free tracker designed for Bluetooth-based locating. The BONSO Smart Activity Pet Tracker Collar offers solid value with its featherlight design, loud audio alert, water-resistant build, and advertised long battery life. It’s a practical choice for indoor cats, yard explorers, or cats who occasionally slip outside and hide nearby.

However, if you need long‑distance tracking, high‑precision GPS accuracy, or nationwide coverage, a more advanced cellular GPS model like Tractive or Whistle will be a better fit. BONSO is best suited for everyday peace of mind, not continuous outdoor GPS tracking.
