About Freshpet
In 2006, John Phelps and Cathal Walsh launched Freshpet, a brand of refrigerated pet food. Freshpet claims to cut back on processing to amp up nutrition and says their foods are made with “whole ingredients”, then “gently cooked without preservatives, and kept refrigerated where meats belong.”
Sourcing and Manufacturing
All Freshpet foods are steam-cooked in Freshpet’s company-owned Pennsylvania facility.
About 97% of the ingredients in Freshpet foods are sourced from the United States and Canada. While all food ingredients are sourced in North America, the company sources vitamins and minerals from other regions. Though China is the biggest supplier of synthetic vitamins and amino acids, Freshpet maintains that they don’t source any ingredients from that country.

What Do Customers Think of Freshpet Cat Food?
Freshpet receives primarily positive reviews on its product listings, but things trend towards negativity once you look beyond Freshpet’s website and their retail partners.
While over 36% of TrustPilot reviewers are satisfied with the brand, unhappy customers share similar complaints. Freshpet is supposed to stay fresh for a week in the fridge, but many reviewers say they opened up the bag to find smelly or moldy Freshpet cat food. And as it turns out, TrustPilot is just the tip of the rotten Freshpet iceberg.
Similar reports appear on social media and discussion boards. After about half an hour of web browsing, I counted 88 customer reports of not-at-all-fresh Freshpet. Complaints include bloated bags, sour smells, moldy food, and pets getting sick after eating questionably-fresh food. Dozens more customers didn’t say the product was spoiled but that their pets fell ill after eating Freshpet.
Positive Reviews
“I wouldn’t buy anything else. I honestly believe our pug would pack her knotted hankie and leave home if she didnt have her freshpet. I have to bulk buy it as it really satisfies her hunger. Thank you everyone at freshpet for creating such wonderful recipes that delight.” – Jacqueline Pullin, reviewing Freshpet on TrustPilot, March 25, 2025
“We have a 4 year old Staffy who is beyond fussy. We have tried various foods, raw, tinned, dry, freeze dried and all from reputable companies but he didn’t take to any of them. Our boy used to go for days without eating and it was visibly showing in his body so I’d resorted to cooking him fresh chicken or fish with vegetables and added salmon oil. We took him to see the vet and he confirmed there was no medical issue and recommended a food they sell, place it down periodically throughout the day and withhold any treats and eventually he’d eat. We tried the food off the vet which was just a grey mush with a vile smell and he wouldn’t even venture close to his bowl which tbh I didn’t blame him because it looked and smelt disgusting. We then spoke to our local pet store who told us to try a popular brand and see how that goes, this was also a failure. Then one day we visited a different Tesco and saw the Freshpet rolls, we had nothing to lose so we purchased a few rolls. He loved it and scoffed a roll down and, we were used to him eating a new food for 1 maybe 2 days and then refusing to eat again but that first roll was back in February and we’re on our now on our second order. We did find the website not as user friendly as some but after the first 2 orders we now know what to do. The orders arrive in good time and are well packaged. To us this food has been a godsend as we were concerned about our boy and buying and cooking fresh wasn’t a feasible feeding routine. We now have a happy, bouncy, loon of a staffy.” -Donna Pountney, reviewing Freshpet on TrustPilot, March 29, 2025
Negative Reviews
“The relatively short shelf life of the products purchased as a “Crufts 2025 Hamper” means that a lot of the meat rolls will likely end up in the bin. Lesson Learned.” – JeffH reviewing Freshpet on TrustPilot, March 21, 2025
“Unfortunately i will not be using Freshpet again. My order was not received and i have sent a number of emails and called your customer services department only to receive a case number and empty promises. To claim my money back, I’ve had to dispute the payment through my bank. I understand issues can arise from time to time but due to the terrible service, I wouldn’t order from this company again. Im still being ignored by Freshpet to claim my money back.
It’s a shame as my dog loved the food.” – J Honeyman reviewing Freshpet on TrustPilot, March 10, 2025
How Much Does Freshpet Cat Food Cost?
Freshpet’s cost varies by line and product type.
If you choose one of Freshpet’s rolls from the Vital™ line, you might spend over $4 every day to feed a 10-lb cat. If you opt for one of the brand’s kibble-style foods in a bag, your daily feedings costs will go down to $0.98 to $1.16—comparable to some of the cheapest wet foods or homemade raw.
Overall, Is Freshpet a Good Choice?
Frankly, you could do a lot better than Freshpet cat food.
On the bright side, Freshpet cat food is typically lower in carbohydrates and plant ingredients than the average dry food and many canned products. Most of their recipes, particularly those in the Vital™ line, are rich in the animal ingredients cats crave.
The food’s biggest selling point is the idea that it’s a preservative-free food that’s minimally processed and belongs in the refrigerator instead of the pantry. This marketing angle is misleading on multiple levels.
Ironically, Freshpet food is loaded with salt, vinegar, and celery powder and can last longer in the fridge than the average canned food. Hill’s recommends that you throw out opened cans of cat food after 5-7 days in the fridge. You can leave an open container of Freshpet in the fridge for 14 days—or so says the company.
All of this salt means Freshpet food is extremely high in sodium—sometimes containing as much as 10x the daily recommendation for cats—which deters some customers. It’s interesting to note that it doesn’t appear that sodium has any negative health effects for cats. In fact, a high sodium diet makes cats drink more water and could reduce the incidence of urinary tract disease.
And besides being packed with more preservatives than the average canned food, Freshpet cat food doesn’t always make it to the expiration date. Indeed, Freshpet is very often not fresh at all. There have been so many reports of Freshpet spoiling before the expiration date or making pets sick that the potential benefits of this purportedly fresh food seem hardly worth the risk or the cost.
Where To Buy Freshpet Cat Food?
You’ll find Freshpet in groceries, big box stores, pet specialty retailers, and natural food stores in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Freshpet Select is sold primarily in groceries and Vital™ is available through pet specialty retailers. Nature’s Fresh is sold in natural food stores.

Our cat took one sniff and walked away ! Have to admit it does NOT smell good even to me…………
Three of my four cats seemed to enjoy it the first time it was offered but they wouldn’t touch it the next time. The ferals didn’t seem to like it. The fox who visits most nights did clear the dishes, so it wasn’t wasted. Love the ad on CB News but I won’t be buying it again.
Been feeding Mio “Tender chicken recipe with garden vegetables” recipe. Yes, it has salt and celery powder. Unnecessary IMO. On the positive side, it’s AAFCO certified for balanced nutrition. For “fresh” moist kibble, it would be good if protein content was higher, but this product still has more protein than Nature’s Variety canned wet foods so it’s a step forward. We’re supplementing with toppers of low-salt tuna or chicken to boost protein content. Dry kibble has more protein but it also has more calories. Our vet wants Mio to have more protein but we won’t make her obese, so dry foods are out.
Was having ongoing vomiting rumbling tummy and diarrhea with my 16 yo tuxedo girl. She is such a picky eater, she quit eating almost any food after a few days. We got her Thyroid levels corrected, and still no GI symptoms changes. She loves the vital roll. I believe this food combined with fmt pills have really resolved her symptoms by 95%. Haven’t noticed any quality issues so far.
I recently bought the Freshpet log for my cat. After 2 days he was fine be. Tonight he puked up his last meal. I think it spoils after opening within 2-3 days. My cat lived the food at first but tonight it was a big NO! We won’t be buying anymore of this product.
None of my 3 cats like the FreshPet Tender Chicken Recipe, not even the feral who eats anything! I tried warming it up, but no dice. Throwing it out.
I have found hard pieces of bones? Rocks? Hard substance in my Fresh Pet Vital grain free cat food tubes. Can someone explain what that is?
Hi Cassandra, thank you for sharing that. I would recommend contacting Freshpet’s customer service for more information on that! https://www.freshpet.com/contact
