Mimosa the kitten was on a college campus crying out for help when her mom found her. “She was so loud. I can’t believe no one else stopped,” she said.
Although the school knew there was an abandoned kitten, no one was helping poor Mimosa. Perhaps they didn’t have the time, or thought someone else would take care of it. This is the story of the people who finally stopped to take care of her.
A sickly kitten cries for help
Mimosa’s mom was on a college tour with her niece when they heard a kitten crying near the football field. Her niece, Abby, wanted to stay and look, but her aunt urged her on and looked for the kitten herself.
After some searching, she found Mimosa hiding in the bushes. The tiny kitten wanted help, but her mom says she was just too scared to allow human contact. She wouldn’t run, but wouldn’t allow her to scoop her up either.
She waited patiently for 45 minutes, until Mimosa was finally comfortable enough to accept pets. Then, she knew she would be able to rescue her.
She could also see that Mimosa would need a flea bath, and was incredibly thin and filthy.
Abandoned on a college campus
Mimosa’s mom knew the first rule of finding a kitten: Always look for the mom and littermates! It’s best not to separate them if at all possible. Kittens do best when raised with other kittens, and those who can’t drink their mothers’ milk have much higher mortality rates.
That said, there were no other cats to be found. She believes that Mimosa must have been dumped by someone.
To make matters worse, the school knew there was an abandoned kitten–but hadn’t done anything about it.
Now that she knew there was only one kitten to rescue, Mimosa’s mom jumped to action. She bought a carrier and wet food, and drove the kitten home. Mimosa slept on Abby’s lap the whole way there.
A new rescue experience
Mimosa’s mom says that she’s rescued cats before, but only from around her neighborhood. This is the first time she found a kitten “in the wild” and had to act on her feet.
“Once you rescue one cat, all the sudden they just get the memo,” she says. There are always more cats in need of help!
Mimosa is also her first experience with an orange cat. She didn’t believe the myths about them until adopting her, but now she thinks it’s true! Mimosa is the most vocal and demanding cat she’s ever had. She knows what she wants and even tells her mom when it’s time for bed. She’s also playful, and loves to chase her own tail or paw at her mom’s hair.
Her being a kitten has also been fun, since her mom is used to older cats. Mimosa is more rambunctious, vocal, and attention-seeking than her gray cat or her tuxedo cat. She loves having a cat who wants to snuggle all day long.
As for the cats’ relationships, they were immediately curious about one another. Their mom waited a couple days to introduce them, planning on a slow introduction. But after seeing their curiosity, she decided to let them interact sooner. They all get along great, which their mom has loved to see!
