This Cat Sang

Have you ever had a cat who meows at night, or when they’re home alone? George the cat “sings” to himself often, especially when he’s feeling lonely. He has a nice voice, and almost sounds like he’s speaking English!

“Sometimes I’m alone”

George the cat has a unique quirk: When he’s alone, he sings. His meows sound like he’s saying, “Sometimes I’m alone,” or “Am I alone?”

Funnily, George will occasionally sing when he’s not alone, but feels that way. His most popular video on social media is from the time his mom was walking their dog, Kuma, and George began to sing with his dad still in the room.

“I guess he thought my husband was part of the couch,” his mom said. She went on to explain that George spent a lot more time around her and Kuma, since she worked from home and her husband worked outside of the house.

When he was first adopted, most of George’s singing happened at night. His mom says he must’ve felt alone “because we weren’t real people to him yet.”

George also began to sing more after Kuma passed away, as though he were feeling lonely without his friend.

George’s origin story

If it weren’t for Kuma, George may not have been adopted. His mom says that the Shiba Inu was 13 or 14 years old when they decided they wanted another pet. Kuma didn’t get along well with other dogs.

Since Shiba Inus are quite catlike, his mom thought he might like a cat to keep him company. George was his mom’s first ever cat, but she fell in love before she even met him.

While browsing rescues online, she saw a photo of a sick, grumpy-looking cat who seemed to dislike the camera. She just had to have him, but George didn’t reciprocate her feelings at first!

He’s a shy cat who took a lot of time to warm up to his new family, but their patience with him soon paid off.

If you’re worried that George is still feeling lonely after Kuma’s passing, never fear. About a year later, his parents decided to adopt another cat.

They gave themselves and George plenty of time to grieve first, and also took time to decide what was right for their family. Though they considered another dog, George’s online fanbase convinced them that another cat would be better.

Cats are social animals who often do best in multi-cat homes, though this isn’t always the case!

George’s parents also waited to find a good match for him. They wanted someone who would match his reserved personality, rather than a rambunctious kitten.

While looking, they found Scotty, a one year old cat who was looked over in favor of his more social littermates. He was the last of them to get adopted, but the universe was just waiting to send him to the perfect home.

Scotty also had trouble adapting to his new home, spending about 24 hours crying and missing his friends at the shelter. But within a week, he and George were best friends.

They love to punch and wrestle one another and act much like human brothers, always roughhousing! They’ve settled into a great relationship, and now George never has to worry about being on his own.
