Unfortunately, not every pet tracking device delivers on its promises. Today, we’re taking a close look at the Tractive CAT 6 Mini and the Lootpaw Health & GPS Tracker to see how they compare in tracking accuracy, health monitoring features, battery life, and more.
At the end, I’ll break down the pros and cons of each device to help you decide which tracker is best for your cat.

When it comes to health tracking, Lootpaw collects data on your cat’s activity levels and sleep. This is displayed in graphs that you can view daily or weekly, with easy-to-read averages at the top.

In the box, you’ll receive the tracker, a magnetic charger, a collar mount, and a non-breakaway collar and bow. Since the collar isn’t cat-safe, you’ll need to purchase your own breakaway collar separately.
Like most cat trackers on the market, the tracker’s design is quite bulky. Although lightweight, boxy trackers like this can get in the way of a cat’s head movement, especially lying down.

The tracker also has poor battery life, and needed to be charged nearly every day during our testing. I did appreciate the quick-release base, however, as it meant that I could remove the tracker without taking off the entire collar.
Lootpaw offers a 60-day free trial on new trackers, and then requires a monthly or annual subscription in order to function.
Background on the Tractive Cat 6 Mini

The CAT 6 Mini is Tractive’s newest cat tracking device. While the company also offers the original CAT Mini, which is more akin to the Lootpaw tracker in design, this version comes with several improvements and additional health tracking features.
The tracker itself is much slimmer and is permanently fixed onto a breakaway collar. It also has an increased battery life of up to 7 days and tracks sleep, activity levels, and resting respiratory and heart rates.
The CAT 6 Mini contains a SIM card that connects the device to cellular networks, allowing you to track your cat anywhere in the country using GPS data. Your cat’s location in the app will update regularly, or you can view your cat’s location in real time using Live Mode. If you want notifications when your cat leaves the house, yard, or neighborhood, you can set up customizable safe zones.

If your cat is nearby but you can’t find them, Tractive also offers a Bluetooth mode, known as Radar Mode, that will help point you in the right direction. The collar can also light up or play a sound to make your cat easier to find.

Like most GPS pet trackers, the CAT 6 Mini requires a subscription in order to function. But unlike other brands, Tractive only offers annual rates, and you won’t receive a partial refund if you cancel partway through your plan. However, Tractive does offer your money back if you cancel your subscription within 30 days of purchase.
Tractive vs. Lootpaw: Review and Comparison

The Tractive CAT 6 Mini and the Lootpaw Health & GPS Tracker both track your cat’s location and activity levels, but there’s a big difference between the two when it comes to quality and additional features. To help you decide which is right for you, we’ll go over the following:

1. Setup and App Functionality
Both trackers were easy to set up and the apps are user-friendly. The Lootpaw tracker takes longer to charge, and setup requires the extra step of mounting the device to a breakaway collar (which must be purchased separately, as the collar included isn’t cat-safe).
I personally preferred the look and feel of the Tractive app, but others may prefer the graphs that Lootpaw provides. Since this is a matter of opinion, I’ve provided screenshots so that you can view each tracking system yourself, and I didn’t factor this into the ranking.

2. Location Tracking
During testing, the GPS tracking on both devices was accurate and updated within seconds while in live tracking mode. I liked that when I got close to the CAT 6 Mini, it told me how many feet away it was with an arrow pointing toward the device. The Lootpaw tracker was slightly less user-friendly in this regard.
The Bluetooth tracking for nearby cats also worked similarly on both devices. Lootpaw’s nearby locator features a circle that grows and changes from blue to red as you get nearer, while Tractive’s radar mode features multiple rings that fill up with color.
The Lootpaw tracker features a color-changing LED light to help you find your cat in the dark. While the LED lights on the CAT 6 Mini don’t change color, it can play a sound to help you hear when you’re getting closer.

3. Health Monitoring Features
Both trackers monitor your cat’s activity and sleep levels, with the ability to view daily or weekly activity in their respective apps. You can also view data from previous days and weeks.
These features function very similarly, with slight differences in the layout of the data. Tractive allows you to set activity goals for your cat and compare their activity levels to others of a similar age and breed. Lootpaw differentiates between low and high activity levels, while Tractive only tracks overall activity.
In addition to activity tracking, the CAT 6 Mini also monitors your cat’s resting heart and respiratory rates. This can alert you to changes in vitals that most cat owners aren’t tracking themselves, potentially helping you notice early signs of health issues.

4. Cat Safety and Comfort
When it comes to cat safety, Tractive wins by a landslide. The CAT 6 Mini is thoughtfully designed not just for safety, but for comfort. My cat much preferred the slimmer design, and I liked that there was no assembly required.
The Lootpaw tracker is sold with a non-breakaway collar that, while of nice quality, is not cat-safe. If a cat gets stuck in brush or even under a bed frame, the included collar could be deadly.
Luckily, the tracker can be mounted to any cat collar, so you can purchase your own separately to resolve this problem. However, I still believe this is a major concern. The Lootpaw tracker is marketed specifically for cats, yet the company hasn’t taken simple steps to prioritize cat safety.
The Lootpaw is also quite bulky, and my cat sometimes looked uncomfortable while lying down because the tracker was in her way. While a cat might adjust to the tracker over time, the CAT 6 Mini seems better designed for long-term wear.

5. Subscription Fees
Subscription fees on both trackers are similar in price, but Lootpaw offers the ability to make monthly payments while Tractive requires that you subscribe for at least one year at a time.
A Tractive subscription also includes resting heart and respiratory rate monitoring, while Lootpaw doesn’t.
Lootpaw’s subscription rates:
- $12/month for a month-to-month plan
- $120 for a one-year plan ($10/month)
- $192 for a two-year plan ($8/month)
Tractive’s subscription rates:
- $144 for a one-year plan ($12/month)
- $204 for a two-year plan ($8.50/month)
- $360 for a five-year plan ($6/month)
While you can technically get a Tractive subscription at a lower cost per month, Lootpaw’s payment system allows for more flexibility, and I don’t see many cat parents making that five-year commitment.

6. Battery Life
Battery life is another category where there’s a clear winner. During my testing, the Lootpaw tracker required almost daily charging, even on days that it didn’t leave the house and live tracking was turned off.
The CAT 6 Mini had an impressive battery life for a GPS tracker, lasting up to one week while in power saving zones (such as when the tracker is within range of your home Wi-Fi) and up to four days while outside of them. While testing, I found the advertised battery life estimates to be very accurate, though the battery drains much faster in live tracking mode.

7. Overall Impressions
Tractive’s CAT 6 Mini puts cat safety and comfort first while also providing accurate GPS and Bluetooth tracking, four health monitoring features, and a longer battery life.
Based on customer reviews, I’m not alone in finding Tractive’s annual subscription fees frustrating, but they’re the only downside to an otherwise excellent product.
That said, both trackers offer excellent location and activity tracking. The Lootpaw isn’t a bad product, but it has a ways to go when it comes to battery life, long-term wearability, and especially cat safety.
Overall winner: Tractive CAT 6 Mini
How Do They Compare in Cost?
At $98 and $79, respectively, the Lootpaw Health & GPS Tracker is nearly $20 more expensive than the Tractive CAT 6 Mini. The Lootpaw tracker will also require the purchase of a breakaway cat collar, while the CAT 6 Mini comes with everything you need inside the box.
Both trackers also require a subscription service in order to function. Their plans are very similar in long-term price, but Lootpaw offers the option to subscribe for a month at a time, while Tractive only bills annually. Therefore, the required upfront costs for the CAT 6 Mini are much higher.
Which Option Is Right for You?

After testing both the Lootpaw Health & GPS Tracker and the Tractive CAT 6 Mini, I think that most cat parents (and their cats!) will be much happier with the CAT 6 Mini.
It’s more comfortable for cats to wear and has a longer battery life that makes tracking your cat and monitoring their health more reliable. It also monitors your cat’s heart and respiratory rate alongside their activity levels.
In my opinion, the only reason to choose the Lootpaw Health & GPS Tracker is if you can’t afford to pay Tractive’s annual subscription rate. Although the subscription prices for each tracker are very similar when broken down, only Lootpaw offers a month-to-month payment system.
If you do choose the Lootpaw tracker, please remember not to use the included collar under any circumstances, as it’s not safe for cats.
Tractive Might Be Right for You If…
- You want accurate GPS tracking that updates every few seconds while in live tracking mode.
- You want to be able to easily find your cat hiding indoors via Bluetooth tracking, LED lights, and sound effects.
- You want to monitor your cat’s activity and sleep levels, as well as their resting heart and respiratory rates, to increase your chances of catching health problems in their earliest stages.
- You want a comfortable, lightweight tracker that your cat can wear long-term.
- You want a tracker with a long battery life that doesn’t require daily charging.
- You can afford to pay for an annual subscription, rather than a month-to-month payment plan.
Lootpaw Might Be Right for You If…
- You want accurate GPS tracking that lags less than a minute behind the tracker’s true location.
- You want to easily find cats hiding indoors via Bluetooth tracking and LED light.
- You want to monitor your cat’s activity and sleep levels and are okay with not tracking their heart or respiratory rate.
- You would prefer to pay on a monthly basis, rather than paying for an entire year Upfront. (Though Lootpaw also offers annual pricing if that system works better for you!)
- You’re okay with purchasing a breakaway collar separately, since the included collar isn’t cat-safe.
Please remember that these cat trackers are best used for monitoring the health of indoor cats, or as a backup plan if your cat rushes outside or escapes their harness. No tracker can make unsupervised free roaming safe for cats.
