About Dave’s Cat Food
The Dave’s Pet Food brand was created by Dave Ratner in 2001. While the pet food brand is only about 20 years old, Ratner opened his first retail store—a soda shop—in 1975. Over the years, Dave began to notice an increasing demand for pet food, so he expanded his shop and rebranded it to Dave’s Soda and Pet City.
In 2001, Dave decided to claim a piece of the pet food market for himself and created Dave’s Pet Food. With the help of a veterinary nutritionist, he developed what he still calls “good food at a reasonable price.” Despite being a small, private-label brand, Dave’s Pet Food is now sold in over 2,000 independent retail stores across the United States, as well as online.
Dave’s Pet Food has continued to grow and expand over the years. In 2023, Dave’s teamed up with certified veterinary nutritionists to add functional diet recipes to the lineup. Today, Dave’s Pet Food continues to support the health and happiness of pets while remaining focused on quality nutrition at an affordable price.
Sourcing and Manufacturing
Dave’s Pet Food is based in Agawam, Massachusetts and most of the food is manufactured in the United States. The company partners with two co-packers to produce its canned cat foods, one based in the United States and one based in Thailand. The Thailand facility is a leader in sustainability and safe fishing practices.
The ingredients in Dave’s cat food are sourced primarily from the United States, but not exclusively. For example, the tuna in Dave’s wet cat food is sourced from Thailand where the food is made. The company states that no ingredients are sourced from China except the vitamin packs, as China is the only place in the world that supplies them.
Recall History
Dave’s Pet Food has been in business for two decades and only appears to have had one product recall during that time. The recall occurred in June of 2018 and only affected a single batch of Dave’s 95% premium beef dog food.
The recall was initiated after Dave’s received a report from the FDA that one lot of the product was found to have elevated levels of thyroid hormone. The FDA conducted the analysis after receiving complaints about four dogs with low thyroid levels. Dave’s issued a voluntary recall in response to the report, and the company has not experienced any recalls since.
What Kinds of Cat Food Does Dave’s Pet Food Offer?

Kate Barrington / Cats.com
Dave’s Pet Food offers a variety of wet and one dry cat food recipes as well as cat treats. Because affordability is one of the brand’s primary selling points, the wet food is sold in a variety of can sizes ranging from 3 ounces to 12.5 ounces. The brand recently started offering variety packs of canned food grouped by can size, food texture, or product line. Dave’s only dry cat food formula comes in 4-pound or 20-pound bags.
Here’s an overview of Dave’s wet cat food product lines:
- Naturally Healthy – Complete and balanced wet and dry cat food recipes formulated to support whole-body nutrition.
- 95% Premium – High-protein wet cat foods featuring 95% animal-based ingredients with very low carbohydrate content.
- Functional Diets – Recipes tailored to specific health concerns and made with restricted levels of phosphorus, magnesium, or protein.
Dave’s Naturally Healthy line includes a variety of flavors and food textures. Chicken, turkey, and tuna are often featured as the primary protein with complementary flavors like duck, beef, salmon, and shrimp. Dave’s wet foods come in pate, stews, and dinners in gravy or aspic. Newly added recipes to the Naturally Healthy line include goat milk for its appealing flavor and digestive benefits.
The Functional Diets line features prescription-style recipes tailored to common health concerns like kidney disease, urinary issues, and diabetes. Dave’s also offers a complementary kidney-friendly semi-moist cat treat.
What Did Our Test Cats Think?
We’ve tested cat food from Dave’s Pet Food numerous times over the past few years, most recently after the brand released the new goat milk products to the Naturally Healthy lineup. In the latest round of testing, I reordered some of the products I’ve tested before to see if my cats still liked them, along with the new goat milk recipes.
My cats enjoyed all the recipes they tried, particularly the kibble and the turkey recipe from the Naturally Healthy line. In previous testing, the Restricted Phosphorus recipe seemed a little dry (customer reviews suggest I wasn’t alone in having this experience). This time around, however, the consistency was closer to a typical pate and my cats ate it happily.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from the new canned foods containing goat milk but my cats didn’t hesitate to try them. The tuna recipe was a particular favorite, possibly because the texture was very moist and easy to eat.

What Do Customers Think of Dave’s Cat Food?
Customer reviews for Dave’s Pet Food are limited on the brand’s website and the food has only become available on major retailers like Chewy in the last few years. Even the three most popular products on Chewy have fewer than 600 reviews, as of July 2026. For the most part, however, customers seem to like the brand and most products have an average rating between 3.8 and 4.2 out of 5 stars.
Let’s take a look at a few reviews from some of the most popular recipes from Dave’s Pet Food.
Positive Reviews
Customers are generally pleased with the quality of the food and ingredients. Many reviews support the efficacy of Dave’s therapeutic diets, and there’s a running theme of owners of fussy cats enjoying Dave’s cat food more than other brands.
“Both my babies eat and love Dave’s! They eat half wet and half dry and their wet is always Dave’s. I buy a few cases with different flavors and rotate them. Such a great price for the quality. My boys have loved every flavor.” – Steph reviewing Dave’s Pet Food Naturally Healthy Grain-Free Turkey Dinner on February 5, 2026
“This is a great option for a quality ingredient and flavorful non-prescription renal food. I also feed Royal Canin Renal Prescription but they don’t like that food very much. They prefer this food by far. It is a great option as a primary early consult food or as a mix in option.” – Rachel reviewing Dave’s Pet Food Restricted Diet Phosphorus wet cat food on May 10, 2026
Negative Reviews
Many negative reviews for Dave’s Pet Food mention damaged cans—it’s difficult to tell whether this is a shipping issue or if the cans arrive damaged at the retailer. Dissatisfied customers also comment that some paté-style foods (especially the Functional Diets) are sometimes drier in texture than expected.
“I had ordered many cases of this food with few problems. Then I started getting case after case with dented cans. I changed flavors in order to get a smaller sized can, in case the can size was the problem, but they still arrived dented. Dents would be in different spots on the cans, including on cans that were in the center of the case and therefore should’ve been protected by the surrounding cans. The cardboard boxes have arrived intact.” – Mom of Mo reviewing Dave’s Pet Food Naturally Healthy Chicken Dinner wet cat food on July 17, 2026
“Food had a bouncy synthetic texture! No one would eat it – Hills is much better – tried this for a variety because cats get bored with food. Don’t bother!” – Denise reviewing Dave’s Pet Food Restricted Diet Phosphorus wet cat food on June 6, 2026
How Much Does Dave’s Pet Food Cost?
Dave’s Pet Food was built on the premise of “good food at a reasonable price.” Ranging from $0.25 to $0.70 per ounce for wet food and around $0.27 per ounce for the solitary dry food, Dave’s is similarly priced to brands like BFF by Weruva and Nulo. Dave’s sets itself apart from the pack by offering a higher level of quality than many similarly priced products.
The daily cost to feed a 10-pound cat Dave’s Pet Food wet cat food would range from about $2 to $4. Dave’s dry food is much cheaper, costing under $0.50 per day for the average cat.
Where is Dave’s Pet Food Sold?
The founder of Dave’s Pet Food is an independent retailer himself, so in-store sales of his pet foods are limited to independent pet retail stores. The food is also sometimes sold in feed stores and animal supply stores. Use the store locator on the brand’s website to find a retailer near you.
If you prefer to shop online, you can buy Dave’s Pet Food directly from the brand. Dave’s is also carried by major retailers like Amazon, Chewy, Pet Flow, Pet Life, and more.
Overall, Is Dave’s Pet Food a Good Choice?
Dave’s Pet Food appears to hold true to its motto, “good food at a reasonable price.” While the carbohydrate content of Dave’s cat food varies wildly, the objective quality of the products seems higher than formulas from other brands that are similarly priced. Dave’s pate-style canned foods appear to offer the best value.
If you have a picky eater, Dave’s offers a variety of flavors and textures, many of which seem to appeal to fussy felines. The Restricted Diets may also be worth considering if your cat is at risk for urinary or kidney problems. Just keep in mind these foods are for intermittent feeding only and it seems to be a toss-up whether your cat will like them or not.

Unfortunately, the turkey & beef flavors in Dave’s “95% Meat, Limited Ingredient” line of canned cat foods have been discontinued, as of March 2025. I reached out to the company and they said their co-packer’s Canadian plant closed & they only moved a few formulas produced there to their American plant; the beef & turkey flavors were among the flavors that aren’t being made in their American plant.
I received a free sample cam from Dave’s after looking for alternatives to Hill’s for my old bat with kidney disease. She really liked it, based on her first feeding. I want to point out that the restricted diet-low phosphorus is made with chicken and chicken liver, yet the can says it’s made in Thailand. That’s disappointing since I don’t necessarily trust their food safety regs.
Hi Amy,
Thailand actually has solid facilities with good control measures. You can read more about it here:

Chewy.com is not an independent retail store so your article should reflect this because it’s misleading and it’s false information. Dave’s is sold at chewy.com which you obviously know because you posted a review that says this.
Hi Chris, the comment about independent retail stores is referencing brick and mortar stores. We separately mention online retailers, including Chewy. I can see how the wording could be clearer, though, so we’ll make a change. Thanks for pointing it out!
Hi, I was very interested in buy from Dave’s pet food but realized all of their Naturally Healthy line contains carrageenan, which is a known carcinogen. Did you come upon that during your research and what’s your opinion?
From what I can see, the evidence against food-grade carrageenan in food is not strong. I made a short video about it here.
According to this website (https://catinfo.org/chart/index.php) the carb content for the Naturally line is much lower. It’s there a reason for such a difference in your numbers vs theirs?
Thanks!
Hi Amanda, thanks for pointing that out. The numbers in our article are based on the guaranteed analysis, which only gives us minimum and maximum values for non-carbohydrate nutrients. This can lead to some discrepancies with actual nutrient values. Reviewing at scale and using automations, it is difficult for us to obtain typical nutrient values for every brand we review. To get more precise values, I would recommend contacting the company for more information on each recipe.
