When Lin met Gracie, she knew it was meant to be. She had such a unique look, from the cute scruff of white fur on her neck to her crossed eyes (a result of having cat flu as a kitten).

She knew they could do great things together, and they have! Today, Gracie is the mascot of Gracie’s Rescue, which has helped find homes for over 1,500 animals.

Gracie’s Rescue

Lin runs a rescue in Cyprus with the goal of helping as many animals as possible. They say you can’t save them all, but she and others like her in the animal rescue field try their absolute best.

Lin was out to eat for her friend’s birthday when she met Gracie. They’d eaten a lot of fish, and she’d noticed a colony of stray cats at the street corner, so she brought them their leftovers.

Gracie was a kitten then, and came to her immediately for food. She looked incredibly thin, so Lin used this as a chance to check on her condition.

She immediately noticed her unusual appearance and was interested in her. She decided to make an exception to her own rules and take her home, expecting to treat her flu and adopt her out to a new family.

Gracie couldn’t be on very strong medication, because she was so small. It was a slow process, but she grew stronger and started to put on more weight as time went on.

She was timid at first, but with patience, she warmed up to humans and learned how to be a pampered housecat. Now, it’s like she was born for this life! She’s developed a fussy personality and acts like a total princess, refusing to eat with the other cats.

“I cannot be like these peasants. I need to be somewhere special with my own golden plate,” her mom jokes.

But Gracie comes by it honestly. After all, she has been named queen of a charity that’s helped over 1,500 animals in need. The other cats should thank her for her service!

Finding a Place to Belong

So many people wanted to adopt Gracie, her mom says, but her place is with her. They’ve become family, and she just couldn’t bear to give her up!

Once she adapted to her new home, she became a “little loving, purring, biscuit-making machine.”

She’s quite independent these days, but still needs a reminder from time to time that she’s safe now. While some cats like to be held and pet, Gracie prefers to show her love by sitting nearby and listening to her mom’s voice. She loves to be talked to and will move closer to show her interest, purring all the while.

Before she founded her rescue organization, Lin says she was struggling to balance caring for several rescue animals with serious injuries. Rescue work can be very expensive, and she wanted to help more animals than she could by herself.

She was able to find a great online community to help, and decided to make the rescue official a few months before meeting Gracie.

Maybe we can’t save them all on our own–but with enough people working together, it’s a lot less daunting! If you want to help cats in need, consider checking out Gracie’s Rescue on Instagram or contacting animal rescues in your local area and asking what they need!
