Scrumptious From Scratch Cat Food Reviews

#1 Scrumptious From Scratch Chicken – Dinner in Gravy

View on Chewy

The primary protein source in this food appears to be chicken.

Chicken and chicken broth are the first ingredients in this food. Scrumptious from Scratch makes a point of saying that their meats, such as chicken, are not mechanically deboned meat (MDM).

This has been an issue in the European Union where meat scraped from the bone has been called “white slime.” It has been likened to the “pink slime” from beef that became a story in the U.S. several years ago. Scrumptious from Scratch uses chicken and tuna that is flaked or shredded instead.

The third ingredient in this food is sunflower oil followed by tapioca starch and later guar gum. Sunflower oil is rich in omega-6 fatty acids. Tapioca starch is likely added to help make the gravy. Most cat lovers will recognize guar gum since it is used in many cat foods.

It is a binder and fiber fiber but some cats have problems with it. Although it is widely used, many cat lovers don’t like to see it in their cat’s food. To be fair, it can be very hard to find wet cat foods that don’t contain some kind of thickener or gel such as guar gum.

The remainder of the ingredients in this food are mostly vitamins and minerals.

Each can is 2.8 ounces. Scrumptious from Scratch Simply Chicken – Dinner in Gravy contains about 26.4 calories per ounce.

High standards, good meat protein content and low in fat, Scrumptious from Scratch Simply Chicken – Dinner in Gravy also appears to be low in carbohydrates.

#2 Scrumptious From Scratch Simply Tuna – Dinner in Gravy

View on Chewy

The primary protein source in this food appears to be tuna.

Tuna and tuna broth are the first ingredients in this food. As with their other recipes, the tuna in this food is not mechanically deboned meat (MDM). It is flaked red meat tuna so it should be a higher quality meat than meat that is scraped off the bone.

The third ingredient in the food is sunflower oil along with modified tapioca starch. Sunflower oil is high in omega 6 fatty acids – an essential fatty acids. Omega 6 is important to your cat’s health but it is best when used in the proper ratio with omega 3 fatty acid. Some people will probably point out that there are better oils for use in cat foods, which is true, but sunflower oil is not a bad oil.

This food also uses xanthum gum. Xanthum gum is similar to guar gum. It’s a “functional carbohydrate” which in this case means it helps to stabilize a food. It’s used in salad dressings, toothpastes, and many other human foods today. When you mix things together, xamthum gum is good at stabilizing them and keeping them mixed. It is probably used to keep the gravy in the food mixed.

The rest of the ingredients in this food are mostly vitamins and minerals. But the food does contain Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K Activity) which upsets some pet owners because this is a synthetic source of vitamin K.

Cats and other animals only need a very small amount of vitamin K in their diet. Some companies don’t include any kind of vitamin K in food at all because pets may get all the vitamin K they need from eating a few greens. Other foods add a few greens or trace elements to their recipes to supply the vitamin K.

It’s doubtful that this minute amount of synthetic vitamin K will harm your cat but we are pointing it out in case this is an issue for you.

#3 Scrumptious From Scratch Sardine And Mackerel – Dinner  In Gravy

View on Chewy

As we mentioned earlier, Scrumptious from Scratch features lots of tuna and chicken recipes. They also have some pumpkin formulas. And then there is this sardine and mackerel dinner in gravy which sounds delicious.

If your cat is a real fan of fish, this sounds like a wet food that might appeal to his taste buds. Sardines are the first ingredient and mackerel is the third ingredient.

All of the Scrumptious from Scratch formulas are grain free, gluten free, and feature human grade meats.

The food also contains sunflower oil and tapioca starch.

Tapioca starch doesn’t provide much in the way of nutrition but it’s also not a harmful ingredient. Even wet cat foods generally require some kind of starch for bulk, texture, and shape.

It can also act a little like fiber in the food. It’s not unusual to find this starch in a wet food with gravy. The only reason you might want to avoid it is if your cat is obese or diabetic. In those cases, the carbs in the tapioca starch might be too high for your cat.

This recipe also contains guar gum. Guar gum is a binder and fiber but some cats can have problems with it. Many cat lovers dislike its presence in cat foods. However, it can be difficult to find cat foods that don’t contain thickeners and gels such as guar gum.

The food does contain Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K Activity) which upsets some pet owners because this is a synthetic source of vitamin K. Cats and other animals only need a very small amount of vitamin K in their diet.

Some companies don’t include any kind of vitamin K in food at all because pets may get all the vitamin K they need from eating a little grass or a few greens. Other foods add a few greens or trace elements to their recipes to supply the vitamin K.

It’s doubtful that this minute amount of synthetic vitamin K will harm your cat but we are pointing it out in case this is an issue for you.

Scrumptious From Scratch Sardine and Mackerel – Dinner in Gravy only contains a few ingredients other than the vitamins and minerals. Those ingredients generally look good though some people may not like the tapioca starch, the guar gum, or the synthetic vitamin K. This appears to be a good quality cat food that cats should enjoy.

Each can is 2.8 ounces. Sardine and Mackerel – Dinner in Gravy contains 74 Kcal per can or approximately 94 Kcal per 100 grams.

We have been trying to wean our two cats “we inherited” off of Fancy Feast to something more nutritious but it’s difficult because they really like Fancy Feast Wild Salmon Florentine. They will eat Scrumptious Tuna with Ocean-fish but not their favorite. I might have to mix the two together to keep them happy.

Scrumptious from Scratch seems to have gone under – everything on Chewy is listed as Out of Stock, with no option to be notified when it comes back in, and my local pet food store has not had any of it shipped to them in many moons. Shame, because my cat was insane for the Simply Tuna…
